I just got my first restoration job in. It's a '73 Skiroule RTX 447. We've got all of the parts we need tracked down, but we're curious about the racing history of these machines. This one has been raced as far as I can tell. It has a steel fuel cell, vent holes cut out everywhere and decals removed where the holes were cut, the low windshield and the handlebar mounted cyl. temp gauge. The owner of the sled has had it since it was a couple of years old. I'd like to clean this one up and get it back into it's original race form. Were these more of an oval racer or a CC racer? I asked him if he bought a repopped hood and windshield when he dropped it off, so luckily I have something to work with. He's trying to track down some history on this machine.
Are there any trouble spots to look out for on this machine? We're replacing hifax, bearings, tie rod ends, belt and rebuilding the engine. So far as I can see, this machine has been meticulously cared for for nearly 40 years. Does the 447 (437cc Sachs twin SA2-440C) use the same pistons as the RTX 440 running the SA2-440 motor? I'm pretty excited to finish this one because we've got a real shot of getting some history on this sled. I've always like the looks of the original pickles.
