Ignition problems?

Post by Deleted User »

I have a 74 john deere 400 with the points and condensor system. Everything appears to be fine and it runs okay when you get it throttled up. But when it's idling, you can hear the ignition cutting in and out and it often dies out. Then you have to start it back up again. Once the sled gets moving, it goes to a top speed of 42 mph but no more, it kind of bogs out. Shouldn't it rev up? I just rebuilt the carb for the second time now so I don't think it's fuel related. Why does the ignition keep cutting in and out at idle?

Ignition problems?

Please read the trouble shooting FAQ.
Your ignition system no doubt needs to be inspected and cleaned.
There could be bad components, but you need to narrow down the choices, points are the first thing to look at, then plug wires and caps.
We'll be glad to help you, at this point your question is kinda wide open.

Ignition problems?

I would really have to hear the cutting in and out its possible the coils have a poor ground and the engine vibration makes it loose a ground sometimes etc many different things could be. Well 42mph outa this sled probably isnt all that bad depending on rider size etc but if its bogging out at that point it might be to rich and the high speed needs to be leaned out.
