Picked up a Liquifire today for $50. I never have smelt a gas tank so varnished have to figure out how to get it out. The guy said he knew nothing about sleds and had a reed block out apparently for a long time. There's dirt in the intake throat used the vac and started to clean the intake and found one of the rubbers is tore up. Can you still find the rubber intake boots? Hopefully this is all I find for issues, luckily the carbs were drain for whatever task they were performing. Is the numbers on the lower back of the belly pan the serial?

Good luck with your Liquifire, give us the numbers that are stamped and we can tell you what it is. Carb mounting rubbers are available aftermarket. If you need reed cages, I or others may have good used ones.

As Harley said, the carb boots are available. I prefer genuine Mikuni over the after market ones. We do indeed need a bit more info from you.

I have some misgivings about the fact that a reed assembly has been out of the case for some time. This exposes the crankshaft to dirt and moisture, and it seems in situations like these, no one ever thought to oil the crank up good.

How much money are you willing to stick into this sled?

To put it bluntly, this isn't a cheap hobby.

The number on the sled is 85015. More than not being a cheap hobby is the parts availability I need a suspension spring for my sportfire and I'm having a hard time finding one.I found this liquifire on craigslist he said make offer and $50 it is. The suspension and steering linkage on the liquifire is alot better than my sport, but I just rebuilt the sport engine last winter. The motors turns fine but I'm concerned with it being open too. I don't want to tear it apart but if I run it I may just end up doing it anyway. It appears that jd sleds are like chips you can't have just one.

If you want this to be a reliable rider, I'd say you need to pull the engine apart and see what you've got. The cranks can be rebuilt to a point, the ball bearings and seals are no problem, but the lower rod bearings are not available, and the pins they run on aren't really replaceable.

I'd want to know why they had the reed cage off in the first place?

I assume this is a 440? These are a fairly desirable machine.

Shadetree lists Sport/Trail rear springs in their catolog at a closeout price or $9.00 per side.
They also have Mikuni boots at $10.00

It's a 440 I'd assume the cage was out because they didn't look at the intake rubbers and see the slit in between the intake.The way it was when I got it, the intake was laying on the bottom all lines attached carbs still on I pulled it all to clean up the carbs and intake and noticed the slice on the bottom of the same side the cage was out of. It's to bad because it was left open but I probably wouldn't have got it so cheap if it wasn't. The biggest cosmetic defect is one of the vents on the hood is broke. The left rear wheel is blown out just like my sport.

There is a topic in the FAQs on how to rebuild the idler wheels. They no doubt need it.
