1977 JD300 speed and rpms
According to my tach at full speed my Kolher K295 only revs at like 6000 rpm. Is that correct? Max speed is about 25MPH which seems slow for 28HP.

If you're only doing 25 at 6000, your clutches are not shifting. Time to inspect them.

Thats what I'm thinking as well, something must be wrong with the clutches, which is why i'm wondering what the peak rpm should be on this motor. I think the clutch are shifting to early keeping the rpms to low, would 7500 rpm make sense for this motor?
I think it has a comet duster 94C primary clutch.

Assuming that you have already cked that the drive belt is not worn, The 94C Duster being a smaller OD than maybe a OEM clutch on a 300 Might keep the speed slower? Also if the Duster you have was set up for the Spitfires with either the Kohler or Kawi engine then it would probably be set up for a Max RPM of 5800-6200 RPM
The Kohler K295-2AX engine should have a Governed or Max RPM of 6500..
You might try a New White Spring M67799 or a High altitude puck kit the lighter pucks might get the RPM's up a little.
I do have a NOS set of AM54870 Hi-Altitude Pucks ( 9 Pucks with 1" holes in them, they are for 8000' & above) These would be the lightest available for the Silver Cover 94C clutch.
I also have a NOS set of AM54919 pucks these are the lightest ones available for the Black Cover 94C clutch.
$25.00 ea ( 9 pucks ) + Shipping
