exhaust

I have a 1975 JDX 8 and the top of the muffler was rusty and falling appart. I made a new top for it but I don't know what I should do about the inside. All that was in it was a circular metal ring you could call it and some mesh maybe a spark resonator? Is that the only stuff that belongs in it? I just rebuilt the engine and I don't want to blow it up or it run like crap because the exhaust muffler. Any help would be great thx

The can just has a spiral pattern from the middle out, but I've never had one open enough to see a screen. The pipe section itself is what should provide the tuning aspect of the exhaust, and the can's main purpose is to keep noise down. I think you're in good shape.
