Jets?
I read the article 101 carb cleaning. I screwed the air screw 1 1/2 turns out, pulled out the pilot or main jet and it was clean. Where is the main jet located? I only see the obvious ones on top. With that said it still only goes with choke open...

Re: Jets?
The main-jet, needle jet and pilot jets are located inside the bottom bowl area. You must remove the carb, turn it upside down and remove the 4 screws securing the bowl to the carb body. The main-jet is threaded in the center , into the bottom of the needle jet. The pilot jet is off to one side next to the main jet.1980spitirejjs wrote:I read the article 101 carb cleaning. Re: Jets?
If you're 100% sure the carb is clean, You may have another problem. You could have a bad crank seal, base gasket or an intake leak caused by a bad intake gasket, cracked spacer or bad intake boot. I'm assuming you're running with the airbox attached. You'll need to run it with an airbox. If you're carb is clean and your airbox is attached, check out the FAQ section. Matt posted a really good article in the FAQ section about making your own pressure tester and how to use it. I would recommend pressure testing the engine and seeing if you have a leak. When you give it a quick full throttle burst does it kind of BUAAAAAAGHHH and then try to die? If so you can almost guarantee an air leak somewhere. Tell tale signs are greasy, oil residue around a seal or gasket area. You can start by spraying starting fluid behind the clutch when the engine is running. If it revs up, that means the crank seal is shot and you're sucking in outside air. If you're running a 30 year old engine that has never been freshened up, it's probably a good idea to at least re-ring it and install new gaskets and seals. The Spitty engine is as simple as they come and would make a great Saturday project.

Re: Jets?
Yes, the sled fires up fine and when you go to give it gas it bogs and stalls with no choke, flies with choke on. Also once it stalls it wont start again until about 30 pulls! After it was warmed up?

Re: Jets?
Not sure if this is the same sled or not so I'll say it again, once you open the throttle it bypasses the choke. with that being said if you engine runs better with the choke on then your carb is still dirty or something in the low speed part of the carb is plugged either the pilot jet isn't working properly ( plugged or not fully clean ) or one or more of the orifices in the inlet of the carb are dirty or plugged.

Ok I have the carb out, I removed the main jet, it has cracks in the end of it. Would this be causing my problems?

Re: Jets?
I'm wandering IF you not talking about the NEEDLE JET?? It sounds like your not familiar with the nomenclature of the parts in the Mikuni round slide carbs?? That's not a real big problem BUT I think it would be best for you to find ( on Ebay or from John Deere ) a JD Fine Tune Manual 79-83 Snowmobiles, Horicon Works, SP-509-H2 ( this book has a blue cover ) it has sections of how the carbs work & the name of all the parts for the carbs & the clutching for all the Deere sleds produced from 79-83.
There are sections for Carburetion, Power Train, Suspension, Diagnosing Performance Problems, & Specifications for all the 79-83 sleds
This will help YOU to help US to diagnose any of your problems you will encounter with your sled & any other Deere's you happen to purchase in the future..
DON'T MISTAKE the above mentioned FTM for the JOHN DEERE_FINE TUNE MANUAL_76 - 79 SNOWMOBILES MANUAL this manual does not go indepth as much as the BLUE covered one does, & does not cover the Spitfires or any of the Newer sleds..

Re: Jets?
Great thanks! Looking at the manual the piece that is cracked a little at the bottom is the jet needle.

Re: Jets?
Sorry but there is no such thing as a Fireburst carb.. Let back up a little,& start over.. What is it your working on again??
Sled Year, ( production date of 10/78 would be a 79 model year etc. ) Model, & serial number, Engine model & CC, that might help us figure out what carb your sled has on it??
There are 2 types of carbs that the newer Deere's used. a Mikuni VM which has a round barrel shaped slide that opens & closes up & down to function & the Mikuni Butter Fly carb which uses a flipper that opens & closes to operate the carb function.
IF you have a Mikuni VM style, then Number 36 is the main jet. & number 21 is the pilot jet, the pilot jet operates at LOW speed & seems to be where your having your problems..
If you have a Mikuni butter fly carb there is no link to that on the website that was previously given to you, MAYBE someone knows where there is a link to that particular style carb..

Re: Jets?
OK I think I finally have this figured out.. the reason you are calling this Fireburst carb is because your looking at the parts catalog & were all looking at the fine tune manual.. Parts page is saying Carburetor ( Fireburst ) ( serial number 95001- )
I believe what your working on & correct me if I'm wrong, is a Spitfire with a Kawasaki/Fireburst, TB 340 A, 340 CC engine with a chassis serial number of 120,001- ( meaning above 120,001 ) Which would make the carb a Mikuni Butterfly Type Carb. Again assuming that you are using the parts catalog section of the link you were given that is why you can't find what were calling the main jet.
On the parts page # 38, number 8 would be the main jet & number 19 would be the pilot jet.. Why Deere would call these a nozzle in the parts catalog & a Main Jet Or Pilot Jet in the Fine Tune manual I would only be scared to guess ( probably to screw with my mind in my later years for what I called some of there engineers back in 76 )
I really have a limited amount of experience with this type of Mikuni Carb as I really didn't care for them..
But with that said, I'm sure they are just as fussy as the other Mikuni carbs when it comes to dirt or grime.
I do know that they need to be disassembled completely to be cleaned properly & that all of the small orifices will need to be clear & clean so that the carb can operate as it's suppose to..
Hopefully someone else with a better knowledge of the Butterfly Mikuni than I will jump in now & help you out in fixing this..
