JD 300 Chain Tension Problem?

Post by upbeck »

I think that I have a loose drive chan issue. The symptom is a loud popping sound and shaking when the sled in under a heavy load usually while trying to get moving. My goal is to guide my son through the process of checking the chain tension and adjusting chain tension.... if my guess is right about the cause.

To make things difficult, I'm away from home, so I'm trying to help my son diagnose and fix this problem from long distance... just in time for the "snow day" that he is hoping for by Wednesday or Thursday this week.

The tech section link to possible diagrams does not seem to work. So I'm hoping that someone can assist with a diagram or helpful hints.

Thanks,

Jim

Pop off the top rubber cover and have a look-see with a flashlight and feel the chain with your finger.

But it could be that the spocket(s) or chain is bad.

Or it may be that the track tension is way too loose and the drivers are jumping on the track lugs.

Thanks for the help JD600 tand JDT. You were right about the loose track. At first I didn't think that the track was too loose. But my manual said that the chain tension was not adjustable, and the sprocket and chain looked fine. So, all that was needed was a little tighter track to solve the problem.

Thanks again,

Jim
