Cleaned carb runs good until??

Post by 1980spitirejjs »

Hi, I cleaned the carb and the spit runs pretty good, un til you shut it off. Then pul pull pullllll. This is after riding a half hour! I never checked the screen in the gas tank, or the plastic external gas filter. Any clues?

Is it getting Too much gas or not enough once you try to restart?

Do you still have spark? What's your compression at? When you go to restart, you may have to hold throttle open a little.

Jack - Can you explain why the hold open throttle trick is required? On my 02 Poo 700 I can pull all day and it will never start if the engine is warm. Crack the throttle a bit and it starts first pull every time. I don't get it. Someone please educate me.

Sleds with mikuni carbs on, as your polaris would, by pulling the throttle open a bit it for one allows more air in and with more air comes more fuel. Your polaris should start without that though. You may want to check your idle circuit there. hope this is a good enough educating for you.

An interesting note: In the older Honda dirt bike owners manuals the warm starting procedure is to hold the throttle 1/2 way open when kicking the bike over.
My old Polaris XCSP 700 was a pig on gas even when I jetted it 3 main sizes leaner. I usually had to hold the throttle wide open and give it a good strong pull to start it warm.....gotta love Polaris' conservative jetting. It always started on 2 pulls when it was cold.

i would start there with the filter, or possibly the diaphram in the feul pump is bad, pretty cheap to rebuild. shouldnt be a problem if you have rebuit entire seds from the ground up. Good luck,
