79 trailfire 340 carb setting?

Just curious as to where to set the idle and air on my 79 trailfire. The sled has never run "well", but I've never put a lot of work into it either. This year I want to really log some time on it, so I figure I might as well get it running top notch. It backfires pretty bad out the exhaust and doesn't seem to have any real power or a good idle, so there may be other underlying problems too.

First thing I would do is tear down the engine and look for internal problems like crank seal or bad crank bearings as well as possible cylinder/piston damage.
