340/s mods

Post by Sprailfire340 »

With a little more digging there appears to be several modifications from stock. My pics are too big so I started a photobucket account. I knew something wasn't right about the skis. Now I think I know...and what about those bars and suspension? http://s906.photobucket.com/albums/ac269/Sprailfire340/

Mitch
You have a lot of modifications from stock.

The sleds came with mono leaf springs, but is was common to see them changed over to multi leaf.
I have no idea what those bars are off of.
The small wheel in the suspension shot is after market, the originals had aluminum centers. If you look through the race sled forum, you'll see we have a replacement figured out for those.
The glass and ABS pans required a lot of added protection, because they weren't very robust. They didn't bounce off rocks well.
A hole in Don's pan caused him to not finish the I-500

Looks like the bars were handmade. If it were me I would not reuse them.

Either this sled has been through the wringer and repaired numeroustimes or all the reinforcements were put on becasue they felt it would help reliability.

I think it has a lot of character as it sits. I would not go for an as built resto but rather an as raced.

And if you don't want to keep it let me know. Still a great find and project.

As the story goes it was raced in both 75 & 76. My guess is that most of this was added after the first race in prep for the second attempt. You hit on it Todd - the plan is an as raced restore. I'd like to get it mechanically sound so I could eventually drive it at a Waconia event (or similar) in the future. Not hit the trails with my kids, but be able to enjoy it a little more than just pull it around on a trailer. For me it's as much about the sounds and smells and feel on the snow. It will be a ton of work as the motor is probably shot, but something I am very excited about nontheless.

As for the motor being shot, most every thing can be rebuilt or repaired except for the pistons & were pretty sure that the std 340CCW or Wiseco pistons will work, although you might have to use only the top rings as the bottom rings come pretty close to the bottom of the port. Cylinders unless pitted can be just honed out to accept std pistons.. the crank if beyond rebuilding can be replaced with the 440 CCW cranks, not as heavy duty rods but will work..

Good to know. I spoke with Jerome last week and he sounded a little more upbeat at the prospects of working on a 340/s vs the Olympique crank he's working on now for me...I can't imagine why?
