My JD Dator/ oval clone
My JD Dator/ oval clone
i have been throwing around the idea of building a john Deere snowmobile characteristics of a john Deere liquidator for a couple years, but would built from a john Deere cyclone 340 chassis using the stock chassis, and stock f/c 340 engine.im going to be picking up a nice re-buildable sled here pretty soon that i can start working on this spring or summer after i graduate college this may. i have been doing my research and finding out specs, facts, and info on the dators and what makes them a very cool looking sled and unique. The build would be somewhat like a standard restoration of a JD but with a little fabrication and building that would make this sled different just your average john Deere sled. But a sled that can be raced around the hay fields in NY and build trough out the summer and fall, disassembling everything, cleaning, degreasing sand blasting and prepping for paint. Some idea's for what i have for building this is doing all the work to the bare chassis all the paint stripping, prepping and painting myself a acrylic enamel JD green and nice black. chassis would stay the same with no modifications, except for repo dator decals, maybe stirrups, and nice paint job, the steering assembly would be the same as the original cyclone except instead of having the tradition style bars i going to fabricate a a custom steering post that has a 4 bolt handle bar clamp and a set of oval racing handle bars, with a teather switch. I’m going to purchase a repo dator hood and do all the prep and painting myself, and also a set of dator decals to go along with it. the gas tank will remand the same but my friend has a liquidator he is going to be storing pretty soon and said he will let me barrow the seat foam so I can get a pattern made that’s identical to a liquidator seat foam, and has the fuel tank in the rear of the seat. I’m going to build an aluminum fuel tank for under the seat using an original tank to get the measurements from. get a nice seat cover made for the foam that either snaps on or bolts on from under Neath the tunnel. Replace all hardware and parts that will need to be replaced on the rear suspension, along with new limiter straps, bushings, slides, and idler wheels. Find a really nice 2/3 cleated track, or clean up the one that’s on the cyclone and rebuild that as well, replace all the drive train bearings, bushings, and hardware. New drive sprockets, polish up the chain case assembly, not to a mirror finish but so it looks nice, sand blast all the steel suspension and drive train parts that can be blasted and painted. get new jack shaft bearings, new brake pads, clean up all the cast aluminum pieces so a shine, but a new set of skis, and paint the springs, shackles, ect... rebuild the 340 f/c motor with all new gaskets, seals ect... and clean the motor up. rebuild the carbs, new throttle cable and brake cables as well, replace all chassis hardware, new suspension rear shock, and leaf spring shocks, thinking about lowering the rear suspension a couple inches and adding tunnel protector slide strips, if i do that then i will have to get a set of skis and leaf springs that are shorter like north stars or so. and if i can find someone to make a set of custom pipes for the cyclone 350 that look similar to the dator pipes then I’ll have a set made for it as well, there are a lot of ideas for building this Deere that makes it a special sled to me, and with help with great friends, long nights in the garage, and buying all the parts and fabricating, helpful hints and ideas will go into building this sled this summer after i get out of college. and $ not being a real big issue i plan on spending about $4000 into building this but the time it’s all said and done
wanted to see what all you guys think about building a project like this with the different ideas i have for a sled that i would look forward to taking my time and building, and hopefully riding it next winter
Here is a sketch of what i have in mind for this build
If you guys have any suggestions, comments, idea's or places that i can get parts for this build i would greatly apprecaite it

Re: My future JD "clone" build
Whew! Long post. Welcome!
Did you happen to see the Liquidator in the classifieds section that already has a race-prepped 340 cyclone engine? It is is need of a resto, but that sounds like what you're looking to start with anyway.

Re: My future JD "clone" build
yeah ive been watching that closely and checking it daily, i wouldnt mind buying it, i just am waiting till i sell my truck then ill have $3500 to play around with to get a dator or a some sort or cyclone project, ill keep watching it but i doubt that it will get down to $1000 if i sold my truck soon i would probably buy it for $1000, then pay to get it hualled back to ny and work on it this summer after iget outta college
Re: My future JD "clone" build
going down next saturday to MD to look @ a coupel jd's and and pick up a 76 cyclone for $200 with new pistons rings ect.. and a good project sled to build my oval racer/ dator clone (nothing ill prolly ever race too heavy but would be different to take to a show) then i can take it into school this winter and work on it and get things around for the build this summer =)
Re: My future JD "clone" build
did some drawing on the pc and sketched up a lube tank for the jd cyclone and a pic of some oval bars i wanna put on it, so i will have to modify the steering post so that a 4 bolt handle bar clamp will fit on it, only issue is how would i get my brake lever and pertch on with the bend on the LH side of the bars? hmm haha
Re: My future JD "clone" build
i had another question im pricing things out for the build how much is decal set for a liquidator also does anyone have a link buy any chance that they can be ordered from? thanks -shannon

Yes, Mark at AFE does a great job producing a high quality product in my opinion. I have purchased three different kits from him over the last couple of years and they were all top notch.

Re: My future JD "clone" build
got up early this morning and headed to pick up my cyclone with my good friend from college tagged along, hr & 30min drive and i was there to pick up the cyclone, when i got to see it in person it was in better shape than the pics i seen of it , i also got to check out some more of Shannon’s collection and see a VERY nice original dator that was very cool to check out all the things close up that make them such a unique sled. we probably spent an hr there talking and checking out the other JD's in the collection I’m sure i coulda talked all day if i wanted to haha, so we got it loaded up and paid for it and i was on my way back to York pa with it nice sled tunnel has been painted and surprisingly the tunnels not all dinged up and will make a great candidate for the dator clone, i am taking it in to college next sat for a workshop (part of class for extra credit) and bringing the JD, going to replace all fuel lines and filter, put a new recoil rope and go trough and clean it up some more and blast the steel parts in the blasting cabinet in school what a way to spend a sat. morning/ afternoon picking up a Deere -thanks shannon
here’s a couple pics i figured id share

Re: My future JD "clone" build
thanks , I’m trying to decide if i want to go the route of switching the rear suspension to an aluminum one of a later cyclone? and a all rubber track, it would be lighter if i wanted to race it but if i do that an modify the sled like i mentioned above i wouln't i have to run it in a mod class 440? and it would prolly get spanked buy the other 440's @ oval racing, but if i use a dual carb set up off a liquifire, clutch, and jet the motor, get a lighter track and suspension, and the aaen pipes and fabricate a set of stinger pipes for it i don’t know if i would be able to keep up with the other 440's, its going to be more of a sled that looks cool that i can go out and ride whenever and take to shows in the later summer fall and the white out this coming fall, and the best part will be building and fabricating and the process of cleaning prepping and painting and seeing everything all come together, i have a l/f parts sled that i cleaned up some of the parts so i have everything besides a motor, seat and hood that i can use just gotta look trough the garage next time I’m home for a break from college, either way I’ll keep you guys posted with updated pics and info on how it’s coming along

i admire your enthusiasm for this project these projects are a ton of fun. not everyone can have an idea or a vision and make it happen but I think youve got what it takes . good luck and keep us tuned in on your progress wade
