For whatever my opinion is worth I would have to agree with Greg, I also think that the air boxes need to look as original as possible. I also don't think Greg's mentioned price range is out of line either. If you are running into trouble & still want American Made & can't find it, let me know as I can Ck with the people I'm working with on the airbox boots, I'm not taking anything away from you this will still be your deal I'd just see if they could do it & then put you in contact with them, I have enough Irons in the fire..

Kenny
I'm willing to track down any contacts and compare prices. So...whatever you can offer or anyone else, it would be greatly appreciated.
I'd like to see what the OEM consensus is after a few days. Give anyone that wants to, some opportunity to chime in. I certainly can see both sides. Let's just see what opinions shake out. By the way...now that my little overtime run has ended. I'll try to keep a weekly update, or as new info becomes available. Again, sorry about the delayed updates. Tom :usa:

Sure, find the company that can do the work at the same or even close to the same price point and full speed ahead, first and foremost.
But......

As for the "show" aspect, I don't show either but for me it's a matter of doing it right or not doing it at all. Otherwise I'd just run without an air box at all.

Your turn

I personally would rather pay $100-150 for an exact reproduction than 50 bucks for some have ways there look-a-like piece.

The guys that are restoring these sleds are yes few, but I feel those that are willing to undertake that task wish for NOS, restored original parts or perfect reproductions. In the muscle car market place there are many more concurs cars showing up restored all the time. Owners keep wanting better quality parts and those suppliers that offer sub-standard reproductions have slowly failed and sunk. You need to make a part that is 98-100% close to original and more people will ante up to purchase it to restore their Dators and others may buy it to make clones too.

That being said on doing these Dator air boxes, as far as the concern of pulling jobs from Americans or Canadians I do agree that I also HATE our work going to China. It simply just pisses me off and makes my blood boil that our federal governments allow the manufacturing jobs to leave and the imported parts to flourish !!!

Keep in mind that repro parts for cars that have went to China....that I know a supplier who had to make 11 revisions to the Chinese part before it was of the standard or quality he wished to offer for sale.(YES 11 times !!) He then said that really after all the headaches for only 14% more he could have it made here. The Chinese make good cheap JUNK, and unless you are satisfied with getting a low quality piece at that low initial price to get something close and garbage like. They offer a cheap alternative to make a cheap part, then you must be willing to keep on them to make something worthwhile to offer for sale. The fore mentioned car supplier spent over year going back in forth to get his piece correct.

But in the case of this work one should consider the level or amount of work. If there is only 50-75 air boxes to be made then going to China does not really affect a North American job. with the quantity being so low. If you can get a nice reproduction made here then I would say go for it.

Either way I feel a exact reproduction is what I prefer for my needs.
This my opinion and I hope you can do something for us. :beers;
Thanx Dave

Waiting for qoutes from 2 companies. So far, it's coming up cost prohibitive for oem quality boxes.I know this is taking a long time but,I am exhausting every source. Besides...most of these sleds have been setting without boxes for a while. What's another few weeks/months. Please be patient. T :usa:

First hard qoute to produce 100 pcs oem quality. 195.00 each/based on ordering 100 pcs. Mold cost 17000.00, boxes cost 2500.00,19500.00=$195.00ea. broken down 100 times. The school can still do them for around the original $50.00 each without the ribbing. The primary problem with a project like this is..."Don't have a hundred hard orders" and I'm not going to sit on 10 or 15,000.00 dollars worth of plastic. Especially in this economy. I'll wait on the other qoute before I decide to call the game. T :usa:
