Question about my new to me '73 JDX8

Post by joe1267 »

Just picked up two '73's this weekend. One was my JDX8 with 793 miles and a 400 with 2k for my wife. Both are very clean. I have a carb question about my JDX8. It starts with just a touch of the key and NO choke. Idles nicely, but at higher RPM's it does not want to spin up quickly like I think it should. I was not able to get it above 45 miles per hour on our snow covered lake, almost felt like it was bogging a bit. Compression is good. I am wondering if it might be jetted a tad too rich, hence it not needing the choke to start. Any thoughts are appreciated. The condition of this sled is unbelievable and it came with a complete chassis, skis, and a track that looks brand new...

Joe

Your X8 should have a Walbro, which means mixture changes are as simple as turning a screw.
This should be a 60 mph sled. You may have fuel delivery problems, ie: clogged fuel filter, or carb needs cleaning/re-building.
OR, it may just be very rich. The spark plugs will tell the story.

Please go to the FAQs under Kioritz, and read the "trouble shooting your sled" topic.

Then we'll talk.

Brian, thank you for pointing me to the FAQ wrote. I am lucky that I bought this sled from a guy that had around15 vintage sleds. He re did the tank, lines, timing etc. He even replaced fasteners that had corrosion. Unfortunately, I will not be able to work on it till Friday as she sits up at my camp. Good news is there is going to be more fresh snow by then! Thanks...Joe

Brian, I put a new set of plugs in and used the info I found in your sticky to tune the carb. It was wAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too rich. She now pulls hard and I had her up to a speedo indicated 60mph before I backed off.

Gotta pull the Walbro off my Wife's 400 today and give it a cleaning as it runs great but the idle is intermittent.

Thanks for the great info. Snowing like crazy here right now!
