Just something I wanted to say

Post by grantnelson00 »

After today, I will have sold the last of my John Deere sleds except our family 300 and two parts sleds. I mentioned in my ad that I have lost interest in the sport; I'm not sure that is completely true.

During the deepest part of this little addiction, I thought that if I had kept it simple and just restored my 300, this hobby would have been less complicated and more fun. As I have peeled off the layers of sleds, I find myself more interested in the old family 300. I also feel less like this is another job and it's more like recreation.

I have many interests and had to pare them down to just a few, restoring Deere sleds was a casualty of that decision. I do believe that there will be room in my life for my little 300; there will also be room in the shop-another reason I sold my sleds.

I think I will eventually get a seat reupholstered and store up extra engine parts and clutch items. Perhaps in the end, I will just date this sport instead of marrying it. Anyway, I have received a lot of help from the guys on this site and I felt like they deserved an explanation of my recent lack of interest.

Grant, having a big stable of sleds isn't for everyone, including myself. I only keep two sleds ready to run at a time, and if I buy another, something will go.

Same thing for me too...

This time last year, I had just two JD sleds and now, after a full year later, I've bought, sold, traded and fixed nearly 28 sleds of all makes and models since then; including fixing numerous others for friends/family, not to mention the JDSleds.com Charity Sportfire.

Needless to say, like you, I've become burnt-out on it somewhat, as it's been non-stop busy since August. Sooooo, I decided to sell off a bunch of stuff, only keeping what I truly wanted. As you accurately said, I'd rather "date" the sport than "marry" it as you put it, as it's a lot more fun for me that way. :)

I've kept 3 sleds now for my family and we're all happy as a clam! I think I'll get into restoring vintage and modern engines instead, as building engines has always been my first-love since I was a kid. I don't plan to get rich off of anything, but I don't do it for the money, but rather for the enjoyment of taking an old engine that someone else says is "junk" and making it purr better than new!! :sled:

Cheers and happy riding!

It's honestly a big task to keep and try and maintain any amount of these sleds, I mean I only started a year ago in March and I now have 3 x 300's, 3 x Spitfire's, 1 Liquifire, 1 cyclone, 1 600 and I'm actually picking up Grant's Liquifire so I will be up to 10, and the plan is to run at least 6 or 7 of them each year. I have also already stripped another 4 or 5 JD sleds, so this has become quite a addiction in a short time....but it's better then smoking or excessive drinking..he he he

Don't worry Grant, like anything lives change, passions change and sometimes it's better to let things go on to be loved by another person.....I should write for Halmark!

See ya soon!
