1973 John Deere 400 Spak Plugs

Post by bills2010 »

Not sure what plugs to put in a 1973 John Deere 400 340 CCW KEC engine. I have seen the KEC 340 with a \ but I don't know what that extra nuber is. The tag on the engine has no such \. I currently have B8HS in it. Are these ok? Please help.

IF your sled runs a 1/2 reach plug ( I think the 73's would ) then yes you are running the correct plug, the one you are using is on the cold side which is good unless you are fouling them out, you could even go to the B7HS which would be one step hotter. but I think I would stay where you are if what you are using is working OK..
FYI if this sled has been setting for a number of years I might suggest inspecting & or replacing the fan belt, as if it would break & you didn't hear the pitch of the engine change or see the belt break it will do engine damage.. Over the years they dry rot or get cracks in them or in some cases become play things for mice to chew on..

I agree with Kenny, B8HS is correct. There is normally no slash on the '73 engines, although in some books they are shown as /4.

Thanks guys, appreciate the response. def will get a new fan belt. The sled does seem to be sluggish or under powered. Seem to pick up a bit when I put in the plugs that were originally in it (Bosch, have to see what they were). I believe they are the 1/2 reach. Would a hotter plug help with its lack of power>
