Spitfire / Kohler engine

Post by DeereKid9 »

I am doing a rebuild on a 78 and 79 Spitfire. Some questions that I have come up with. More FYI than technical, but I do need some help. :wall:

1) The pistons are pretty nice, changed the rings, but wondering what the numbers "61.91" stamped on the piston means.

2) Carbs. 78 has slide, 79 butterfly, are the interchangeable or a preference among you guys.

3) Any other really cool tricks that I need to know?

Both of these sleds will be for sale when done. So, if your interested, give me some real good advise.

By the way, I do have a manual.

61.91 is what was stamped on the dome when QC checked over the piston.
It is the diameter of the piston. Would fit in a 62mm cylinder bore giving a clearance of .09mm or .045 on each side.

The slide carb is much less bothersome than the butterfly. But if you are doing an as built resto than use the buuterfly and spend extra time cleaning it.

The 8 tooth ( Optional ) Drivers are more desirable as the Spits have power to spare & is needed & the 7 toothers are really slow..

The 78 should be stock with the slide, so that would be fine to leave original, and if you have the chance to get another slide set-up you would be doing the next owner a big favour dumping that butterfly in the bush. I wish I would have kept my old orig. slide now, but I traded it on a butterfly for a 300.
