No Lights
No Lights
Hi Guys ok heres my prob i have a 82 trailfire lx 440 the motor went down a cylinder after the c clip from the mag side fell out and wrecked the cylinder and piston so while i had the motor out i checked the crank bearing needless to say the crank needs to be redone,at this time i cant afford to fix the original motor but was given a 440 kawasaki motor which bolted right into chassis as well as the stator plug was the same 5 pin plug as the original, the prob is i now dont have any lights working as the wires are in a different spot in the plug for example the 5 wires from original motor were
top pin BLACK
left top pin YELLOW
right top pin BROWN
bottom left pin GREY
bottom right pin YELLOW
now the new plug from the stator is
top pin BLACK
top left pin BLACK
top right pin BLACK
bottom left pin BROWN
bottom right pin BLACK/WHITE
the motor from the original was a TA440 A-F202
the motor in it now is TIC 440 S2A
guys please help me as i now have no lights at all not even the dash lights, did i blow something like the rectifyer and if so how do i check ?? any help is greatly appreciated thanks in advance
PS what is this new motor out of and where would i find stats on the tic 440 ??

Re: No Lights
did they work after you worked on the sled? could have a bad voltage regulator, if you keep blowing bulbs its the regulator, double check the wiring, if its not that then the lighting coil
Many new and used parts available, I ship anywhere. Thanks everyone.
Re: No Lights
lights worked before i switched motors now got nada for lights but.... there is power to the plug from stator just wont get to lights could its just a matter of getting the plugs in the right spot
Re: No Lights
This sounds really familiar. I had the same problem with my Sportfire when I got it. The seller was blaming a bad voltage regulator for the lights not working, even though he had already tried another one with the same result. It turns out they had put in a new lighting coil and switched a couple of the wires. Here is a link to the wiring diagram for a Sporfire: http://www.jdsleds.com/tech/wiring/sportfirewiring.jpg. I can't find a Trailfire diagram, but the wire colours at the five wire plug are the same to the manual I have, you can check out the manual here: http://www.vintagesnow.com/John_Deere_f ... ilfire.pdf. If it is running the wires from the ignition side of the stator must be ok. I am figuring that the top right and left wires are switched or the top right and bottom right are switched, and from the looks of the colours I would say it is most likely the top right and bottom right. It's a bit of a guess, but the top right and bottom left were both yellow, and now one is black and one is black/white, the top and bottom left are off the ignition, so if that works it is ok. The other three are from the lighting coil and two of them (the yellows in the old plug) can be switched. The fact that there are so many black wires makes it hard without actually pulling off the recoil and flywheel to check which wires are coming from what coil. I wonder if the lighting coil in this motor was changed to an aftermarket at some point.
Looks like that engine is out of a mid '70s Arctic Cat.
If you are checking for power with a meter remember that these sleds do not use a rectifier and the lighting coil output is A/C not D/C.

Re: No Lights
if you unplug the yellow wire from the voltage regulater, and the lights dont come on its shot, dont rev the sled when you do this, other wise most likely a lighting coil

Re: No Lights
Wiring diagrams are now up for Trailfires.
Re: No Lights
where would i find out what year this motor is from that way i can see what wires go where is there a site i can go to show moel and year of sled transplant?? thanks in advance guys
Re: No Lights
ty Todd i appreciate your knowledge i will now see what the wire were for a 74 panther maybe that will help figure the no lights prob have a great weekend!!!!!!!!

Re: No Lights
Looks like some wire color changes have been done on your sled making it a trial to get it sorted out.
As you alredy have it running and can start and stop the engine you have two of the five wires accounted for.
This leaves three wires, unfortunatly all black.
Grab the ohm meter. Test all three to ground.
My bet is that you will find one with zero ohms(ground), one with a reading of 0.2-2.0 ohms and the other with a reading of half that.
Connect the ground wire to the brown on the main harness and the other black wire with the highest reading to the yellow.
If you have e-start you will need to connect all three.
Start the engine. You should read about 9-10 volts AC at idle if this hookup is correct.

Re: No Lights
Todd thanks again i now have Headlight still no tail light though although there is power going to the plug so my guess is that it has a ground prob what ya think what are my options???

Re: No Lights
Do you have a brake light?
If yes, than the ground is probably OK.
If no brake light and no taillight check the bulb, socket and ground wire.
Also the wires under the seat and the connector on the tailight and the pins.

Re: No Lights
Todd i guess i should clear up the last message i have power to the plug that comes from the stator through the wiring harness but no power to the plug at tailight with tester
Re: No Lights
When you tested the tallight plug do you put one lead on the chassis or are you puting it on the socket itself?
Do you have power on the brakelight pin with the brakes applied?
You do realise that the two wires that do the the taillight are both hot. One switched(brake) and one hot (tailight).
The common ground is a pigtail that attaches to the chassis(tunnel).
And just to be sure... the headlight does work?
