79 spitfire recoil starter

Post by gnfreak »

when we got the sled last year it was in need of a recoil starter. my bro-in-law picked up a chinese made recoil starter at the deere parts store. welp yesterday it had a major malfunction and broke the plactic cage inside. before i go try to obtain another one is there any better alternative? i emailed someone with a used recoil starter for sale but he said his fit a CCW motor. any chance of interchangability? we were able to keep running by starting it with the rope pulling the starter cup but it takes multiple pulls and i dont want that workout. by the way its the Kohler 340 FA motor. thanks, keith

gnfreak,
I'm not certain if they are interchancable or not, but someone on here will know. Here is one on ebay that is off of a kohler powered spit like yours.

Deere still sells them. I forget the part number, but they are listed for one of there snowblowers. I believe you can get just the internals

that snowblower recoil (am122187) is what was on the sled. i wish i knew exactly what happened but my brother in law was trying to get it started when it broke. may just get another one so the thing runs and maybe try to redo the broken one with some new parts to have a spare. finally registered on jdparts.com and found that the recoil used on the kohler motor in the spitfire was used on a few older john deere sleds. sure would like to put one of these on instead of the snowblower one.
