1980 Liquifire Lower coolant hose remedy
Those of us who have been involved with restorations or what have you on the 80+ Liquifires know that the lower hoses leading to the heat exchangers get a rubbed spot on them due to rubbing on the lower steering shaft mount. I got a remedy .
Most guys know to take a dremel and cut back the lip on the mount, reduce it 1/8" and round off the corners.
Now what about that worn hose...that nobody has...
well you can re-use it by doing this, cut the hose in half, get a piece of copper pipe or black iron that will fit inside the hose from Menards or Home Depot, they sell small sections and 2 hose clamps. Install this pipe in the area where you made the cut, you will have to remove about 1 inch of hose in the cut area to allow for the over length of the hose which has grown due to the addition of this pipe. This pipe now will be in the same location as the original rub, and now your hose repaired and if it were to rub again, you will have copper against aluminum or black iron. This works.

I buy mine at an auto parts store. a real one the common part number has a 223 in it; search this site heavy and you should find it. that is how i got it. they only cost $15.00 bucks or so and you cut about an inch off of it and it fits perfect. they are a heater hose has the same bends i was real happy when i got them. you got to cut the engine and steering area with a dremel to prevent from the ruining the new hose again like you said.

Could you please post the part number and where you purchased the hose from so the rest of us dont have to "search this site heavy"?
Thank you.

"Found them at Fisher auto which is a Federated parts supplier. This was not in stock, they had to order it. The hose is called a curved radiatior hose with a part number of 71223CS. The entire hose is the same diameter. Priced around $15-$16."

Re: 1980 Liquifire Lower coolant hose remedy
Thanks for the input guys.
I am going to see what I can find for a replacement hose. I'll have to do some checking on that part number from Federated and see about availability. Paul that is a good suggestion for splicing the hose. That's the plan if I cant find a replacment. Already have the bracket ground out and sanded smooth thanks to Eric's suggestion last weekend. Wish I would have known that when I had the motor out the last time! I will post a part number and availability if I find something other than the hose from Federated.
Thanks again.

Re: 1980 Liquifire Lower coolant hose remedy
The big rub mark on these hoses comes from the opening in the motor mount plate where the
hose passes through. There is a formed flange on the opening that they began putting a protective
edging on in the 84 Liquifires to prevent this. I don't think the steering is causing this???????
One more thing ........ I have seen this over and over ..... Has anyone actually had one leak?
They look horrible when you take them out but I have never seen or heard of one leak?
Just curious ....

I have one of these hoses on order from NAPA. I had them cross reference the Federated P/N. The hoses are not very plentiful so plan to pay some shipping and wait a few days unless you are lucky. The link below will take you to the NAPA site. Mine should be in next week so I can let you know how it works out. If the link will not work, go to NAPA's website and look up P/N: NBH 7990. It looks like it may do the trick with a little modification.
You are correct saying the motor mount plate is causing the wearmark on the top side of the hose and putting some edging on there will help to prevent that. The steering bracket also likes to wear a groove in the bottom side of the hose. A couple min with a die grinder and a sanding pad will fix that problem. I can possibly post some pics this weekend if anyone would like me to do so.
