I promised a follow up and here it is. I am thrilled to report that the sled is running like a beast AND that there are still honest, affordable mechanics in the world.
I took my sled to this guys home shop and he said he would call me the next day. He took the carb back apart and found a small particle of dirt I missed in one of the small openings. He adjusted the metering arm, adjusted the drive belt, adjusted the chain, drained and changed the chain case oil, adjusted the track and found a small wiring snafu to my headlight all for a whopping $65.00. To top it off he gave me a case of Murphy's Irish Stout cans since I mentioned I liked it when I saw it in the garage. I threw him $80 for the 3+hrs of work he performed and he will now get ALL work that I either can't perform or screw up.
If anyone on this board lives in the Albany, NY area and needs a mechanic from time to time, let me know and I will give you his contact info.
It is snowing like crazy up at our camp and I CANNOT wait to hit the trails with my wife this weekend.
Thank you to everyone for the great input you gave me....Joe

Joe1267,
Glad to hear you got the 400 going!
I am however concerned by your comment regarding him being honest. The 400 chain is under constant tension by two spring loaded white nylon slider shoes. There is no adjustment!

Sounds like you need to keep this guy on speed dial.
Is he a vintage sledhead also?

I should have been more clear, there was a broken spring on one of the chain adjusters that he replaced so they would function properly. I am familiar with how they work as it is similar to the primary chain tensioner on my old Ironhead Sportster.
I certainly have him on speed dial. As to being a vintage sledhead, he and his dad just restored the '72 Ski-Doo 399 that they have had since new. He had an '08 1000cc Polaris monster in his garage as well. He is simply a nice guy that loves to work on motors. Normally I like to work thru a problem myself,BUT we are supposed to meet up with a few people for a ride this Saturday so I needed it done. Can't wait to get on that fresh snow.
Sending good snow vibes out to all that need it!

I'm glad you cleared up the chain adjustment and that you knew what he did. We've all been taken at one time or another on repairs, especially us unsuspecting sorts. At any rate you now have it going and it sounds like you have just found a new mechanic!
