Still finding stuff... old dyno?

Post by billey100 »

Well as I havent posted in a while I am sorry I still owe some of you pics of the Dator that you helped me id. Still cleaning out the garage and we came upon this buried in the stuff. Anyone ever heard of Owatonna Tool Company? We found an invoice through JD for this dyno to my grandpa. Anyone ever even seen a dyno like this in their travels?

Holy Crap!! What a find.
Oh, sorry I didn't answer your question. Owatonna was the special tool company that JD used. Much like GM used Kent-Moore.

WOW...what a find! Wish I could stumble on one of those...be great for tuning old sleds without the hassel of the snow on them everytime you go in and out of the shop

Thanks guys, we are wondering what you do if you had studs? It's track on track probably not a big concern back then I guess. Anyone hazard a guess what this thing might be worth. Is there a JD guy out there that has to have everything in their collection b/c I dont know how many of these are out there. We should be coming to the Great Eastern Whiteout with the Dator if anyone is going from around NY? It's pretty much just how we found it so far its not running probably wont be by the time we go there. Hopefully I can meet with some guys.

I have one not in great shape but givin to me by my local dealer when i bought a bunch of parts from him. They stopped using it because the techs where putting to much pressure on sled and blew up a few new JD sleds back in the day. :sled:

Hi Billy,

First off, awsome find! Those old OTC Dyno's are pretty cool, but also hard on the sleds being run on them. With no way to cool Liquid motor or provide slide rail lubrication, the operator had to be careful. Darn cool find though! I would not have an idea what it's worth, but it would look great in my "John Deere Room".

Secondly, I will be at the white out with a Dator and maybe a 340/s or two. Please feed free to look me up at the show, always look forward to meeting more Deere collectors.

The one that was on display in Horicon last winter had nozzles attached to the sides to spray the track for lubrication. It may have been something they added as an afterthought.

According to the operator instructions in SM2108, the water jets were original design, at least by the time the cleated tracks came out.

Hey Guys,

I stand corrected. I did find a set of instructions for one a few years ago, and "I thought" it said something about having to add external water supply for slider sleds. Maybe it was just saying to hook it up. No matter, it's a very cool find.

Matt,

When was the one at Horicon set up? I don't remember seeing it Thursday night, but then again I was kind of exhausted from the drive. By the pic's it looks like it was deffintely there Friday during the day.

I havent actually got my hands on it yet, these are the pics my dad sent so I dont know what else is there. Maybe in the paper there or around there are so more parts to it. I will upload the pic that shows the ramp as well. My dad is almost positive its never been used it was pretty bundled up still from shipping.

Joe just talked to my dad and we will be there on Sat. I will have my 2 place open load rite with the Dator on there. Maybe you can take a look under the hood and see if there is anything missing. I know a lot of the hoses were pretty well rotted. I am pretty sure we are going to pull the motor this summer and rebuild it as its been sitting pretty long. Some of the other sleds he had there we sold and they were sucking air in from the crank seals so we arent going to risk pulling this one over anytime soon.

I believe the the one that was at Horicon is owned by Netzers from Lena Wi. I am not 100% on this.
They have had it on display the last 2 years at the Balls Beater Run at the Boeyard Bar & Grill in Lena.
This years date is Febuary 6th.

Billy,

I will be at the Whiteout with a Dator or two and maybe a 340/s or two. I have a black 24' enclosed trailer, should have some Deere decorations on it by then. Below is a pic of my rig at the Princeton show with Doug Oster of ETD checking out one of my Dators. The dorky guy next to him is me. Make sure to look me up, and bring your camera so you can get shot of complete sleds to help you bring yours back to life.

Also: EVERY vintage sled should have the original crank seals replaced. After 30 to 40 years the seals dry rot or take a perminent 'stretch' and won't seal.

See you at the show!

The dyno was there all day Friday. I found my paperwork and yes, it belonged to Dan Netzer of Juneau, WI.
