Kohler 295AX carb swap ??

Post by Mr300 »

Considering a Mikuni swap on a JD 300 w/a 295 Kohler. Looking for info on using a VM 30 or a 34. If you've done it, I'd like to know jetting for either one. Thanks.

Mine has gotten a carb off a twin cylinder Indy 500 liquid, sorry I have no more information as to the carb or jetting. I am in snowless Georgia hell where I live, the 300 is in the pole barn of a good high school friend in MN. We went into the Walbro three times, tried a different Walbro, one of the go thrus in the hotel bathroom at a Holiday Inn during Waconia last year. :wall: oh well, at first it would not start without Ether down the plug holes, then when warm it had to be choked about 3/4 to run at low speed. Then after the hotel spray out with carb cleaner and put in a swap meet procured kit it would at least start easy, then to transition or ride it at 15mph you had to work the choke in varying positions. However it did run WOT to the tune of 58.9 on my GPS.

My buddy has it all hooked up (The Mikuni) as he had it lying around, but has not ridden it yet. When you are getting stuff stored and wrenched on for free you tend not to prod the tech to hurry and get it done.

Do a search on this board, this has been done before. I will say this- over at Vintagesleds.com there is a lot of good natured ribbing on Tillotson vs mikuni carbs (Walbros seem to have no friends...) and with all the self professed Mikuni snobs over there not a SINGLE ONE had one shread of jetting advice for me on the swap and despite all the POLARIS EXPERTS not a single one could tell me what model or size Mikuni was used on that year Indy in stock form.

So I gave up asking and we will just try it and read plugs, error on the slightly rich side. I don't give a crap about originality if I cant yank the rope and go. Maybe I will actually get to see and ride the sled next year again.

I have a VM 34 off of a 440 El tigre, part of a twin carb set. May be just right as it would be jetted for a 220cc reed valve motor (1/2 of a 440). Found a VM30 kit for cheap, just not sure if one size would be better than the other. I posted over on VS, got nothing.......................yet.

A friend of mine installed a 34 from a cyclone and make it work. So you can make a 34 work, if jetted correctly.

Anyone make a mount flange that straightens out the carb? Kohler mount tips up, my VM 34 won't sit level. Did the Cyclone use the Mik with angled floats like the late '70's Arctic Cats? What about the Spitfire carb mount?? Didn't they have an angled motor with a Mikuni?? :sled: :sled:
