Shannon your girl needs a sled of her own you can come down and pick up another Cyclone for her same price as first one. Only thing is you will have to dig it out of 4 ft. of snow! It wa cool here today i rode to work on my sled people out digging out and looking at me like i was from mars i was the only thing moving on the road since tuesday! Shannon Garver
Re: My JD Dator/ oval clone
i had my parents bring down my bench grinder, so i went to harbor freight and pick up a brass wirewheel so i can polish parts faster

Re: My JD Dator/ oval clone
thats what im shotign for is something that you can look closely @ and admire all the work and time im puting into this sled when i take it to shows (hopefully buy the fall) if not def i wanna take it to the white out, i dont really do to much evenings hang out with my girfriend then clean parts thats about it outside of school so its getting there little by little and i dont mind showing my progress with you guys =)
Re: My JD Dator/ oval clone
It's always easier putting something back together than with 30+ years of grease and who knows what else on it. Look at the bright side your girlfriend will never tell you to get rid of it after she has put so much work into it.

Re: My JD Dator/ oval clone
that is true, i think that after this clones done when ever that will be that ill start collecting JD's but this build is keeping me pretty busy, i figured that all the misc. parts i can clean and polish and get everything around till i paint the tunnel up this summer and have the room, and access to painting the tunnel, i plan on taking the bulk head out, and painting the tunnel the same color as the liquidator, and doing the bulk head black (depending on what the original bulk head if it was black or green not 100% sure because i have seen the bulk head both colors, and another idea i was playing around was drilling holes with a Multi step bit into the the clutch guard cover for that cool look and it may hep the belt from getting hot, i have a lot of ideas for this build and i cant wait till this summer comes where i can start painting and assembling parts and see it come together
still have some cleaning to do, they didn't turn out as well as i want but they are gonna be painted anyways
its gettign there 1 part @ a time

Re: My JD Dator/ oval clone
Is that the original head gasket you cleaned? I hope you are going to put a new one on.
Re: My JD Dator/ oval clone
i didn't clean the head gaskets the guy i bought it off from had installed a new top end in the sled, i plan on going trough the whole motor, all new gaskets and seals, the bearings seem fine, depending on how much $ i have i would like to get the crank rebuilt with new bearings as well
Re: My JD Dator/ oval clone
still @ it polishing and cleaning, im gonna tackle splitting the cases this weekend, and gonna start degreasing the tunnel and air craft stripping it, the cyclinders look shinny-ier in person, the pic angle wasnt the greatest lol
Re: My JD Dator/ oval clone
As you are totally diassembling every componet (good idea) I am curious as to how many pieces you find that are not serviceable.

Re: My JD Dator/ oval clone
Todd - I am doing the same thing with a 72 Oly 399 for my father. My replacement list consists of gasket set, crank bearings & seals, carb kit, fresh gas lines, plug wires/caps, fan belt, chain tension spring, and bogie wheels and bearings. I thought this was pretty good. Everything else has been cleaned and is in the process of being put back together. Not nearly as clean as Shannon's project...maybe because my girl is no longer the friend but the wife?

Re: My JD Dator/ oval clone

Re: My JD Dator/ oval clone
I always seam to generate a long list of parts to replace when I tear a sled down completely. But that way I am confident that everything is good as new.
The JDX I have on ebay right now is a good example. I will never come out on it money wise but it was fun and yet another great Deere machine was saved from the scrap heap.
