PTO side seal on 76 300
Anyone have any tricks or need anything special to do the PTO side seal on a 76 JD 300? I am about to pull the clutch off, but if I have to split the case then I won't bother and do it in the summer....but if I can just pull it out and tap another in I'm good to go!

Just be careful not to hit the bearing or markup the crank or cases. Good luck

if it has e-start you will want to wait until summer, the gear for the starter is pressed onto the crank, I am not sure if the crank seal is ribbed or not, if not it can be pulled out and a new one pressed in, if it is ribbed you will have to split the case.

Re: PTO side seal on 76 300
what is the best way to pull it out?? if anyone knows what I'm talking about does a rad hose tool, or 90 deg. pick pull them..or need a lot of force? No e-start on mine....guess re-install is just a small rubber hammer and a dream

The service manual says to cut them with a cold chisel and pry them out with a screw driver. To re-install, i use the proper sized deep-well socket and a rubber mallet to provide even pressure to the seal. All of this is assuming that it does not have ribbed seals. As others have mentioned, be sure not to nick the bearing, crank, or case. Hope this helps.

Any way to tell ribbed from non-ribbed before you're arm deep in it?
Re: PTO side seal on 76 300
use the large socket for seal instalation but use the clutch bolt and some spacers to press it in even, the get it out but self tapping screws through the seal without going to deep as to hit the bearing, wrap a wire around the screws and pull or use a claw hammer to pull on the screws like nails. Good luck!

Re: PTO side seal on 76 300
Never heard of a "ribbed" seal before, well except for maybe on a box of trojans..he he he The new seal seems liek any normal push in style, I take it some have a collar on them that fits on each side of the case so to say?JD600 wrote:The service manual says to cut them with a cold chisel and pry them out with a screw driver. Now thats funny right there!
I believe the ribbed seals were only used on the Kawi motors. Someone will let me know if i'm wrong.

After that moo-cang pow works its way through your system you may need more than just crank seals.
