Fan Belt help!

Post by joe1267 »

I have searched the internet and have not been able to find a source for the fan belt on my wife's '73 400. Maybe I missed something obvious, I don't know. If anyone has any info, I would certainly appreciate it. We just got about 10-12" of fresh snow and I want to make sure she is ready to go for the weekend....thanks

Just want everyone to know that the current Dayco belt ADFB367 that is supposed to match JD part number M67762 is not even close. I ordered two belts from Pat's Small engine and went to replace the one on my wife's 73 400 and the belt is a full inch too long. No way it can be used. I did call them and they are sending me a return label, BUT they did not have anything that will work. I cannot in good conscience put the old belt back on as chunks are missing.

I called my local NAPA to see if they could match my old belt which measures 1/2" x 26" and the closest they have, is 1/2" x 26.38".

If anyone has any suggestions, let me know....Joe

The upper fan sheeve is adjustable by adding or removing shims between the two halves.
By removing a shim or two a 3/8" longer belt will fit good.
I think most engines came with two thin and one thick shim.

Thats weird. I just ordered the same belt for my '73 600 and it fits like a glove. What is the manufacturing date of that sled? If it was manufactured in '73, it is actually a '74 model and would take JD #M65414 or dayco #ADFB368

I have ordered several belts from Pat's. Some fit and others did not.

Maybe Kioritz changed the pulley diameter mid year?

It is a '73 with a 15,000 serial number, so according to their listing, I ordered the correct belt. I don't know what went wrong, I merely wanted everyone else to know in case they were looking to order one. The people at Pat's were great and are sending me a return label. I have a large small engine repair place near by and I am willing to bet he has a 1/2" x 26" belt for me.The guy has been there for the last 50 years. I can't say if anyone has changed a pulley on my sled sometime in the last 37 years.

Todd, to my knowledge, I do not have any shims for the upper sheeve. I am simply hoping to grab a 26" belt tomorrow.

I just looked at the parts manuals.

Looks like 3 shims (deere called them spacers) on the CCW engines.

Also they list three different belts.

So I guess like everything else, size does matter.

Todd, thanks for that info. I will see if I can locate some of the spacers for future. Guys like you have been a valuable resource for helping me enjoy my old sleds more this season. I will be riding more today as well. Can't seem to get enough....

Instead of using standard measurements, you need to use metric messurements. Take the belt to Peps Boys or other sources and ask them to match it up to the metric belts.

Figured I would post a follow up. I just got back from my local small engine repair shop that has been there longer than I have been alive. I handed him the belt, he looked at the number on the belt and said it is a 1/2"x26" and that he had them in stock.

When he came back I was grinning from ear to ear when he handed me the Gates 6826 as it is a John Deereish GREEN. he said that it would look right at home on my sled. I will have it on later today. We are getting snow as well. WHOOHOO!
