1980 Liquifire troubles

I have a 1980 Liquifire. It idles fine. When I put it up on a stand in the garage, I can rev up the motor for quite some time and it still runs fine. When I put it down on the ground and try to ride it, it will run for a 1-2 minutes, then bog down and die. It seems that it is fine until there is a heavier load put on the motor. It is getting gas and oil. Any ideas.

I'm sure you checked the gas level. But. If there is a small amount of gas in the tank you might not get enough when it is level. The pick up for the fuel is at the front of the tank.

So if your like me and sometimes over look the some of the simple things. Add some more gas :)

I did check the gas and there is gas in it. I have also pulled to bottom of the carbs off when it dies and there is gas in the carbs yet.

First off, welcome Brian!

I would start by checking the air box and exhaust for restrictions. Mice love to make thier home in those pipes! Also, make sure those carbs are SUPER SUPER clean!

This might sound a little odd. At least it did to me when I was told this. One of the guys I work with has a 80 LF that was acting exactly as you described. I suggested a clutch problem, but never went to look at it. He claimed that he put in a new set of B9ES plugs and it was back to normal.

I suppose it is possible that one or both plugs are failing under compression when the engine is under load. Anything can happen right?

I too just got an 80 LF and had very similar issues. When my sled was cold (just started) it worked fine but once it was warmed up it acted similar. It would idle (with help at the throttle) but if I got on the throttle it would just spit and sputter without enough power to even move the track. I eventually pulled a plug wire at a time to find one cylinder was dropping out. I took to a mech and he said he was 99% sure it would be an internal coil and he was right. It didn't test at spec so he replaced it and wa-la that problem was solved.

I put new plugs in and that didn't solve the problem. I will have to try the coil.
