1972 JD 500 Clutch sticking

Post by Len Z »

I found a 1972 JD 500 that has been sitting in a barn for 27 years at my father-in-law's. Thought it might be a good project to teach my 13 year old son some mechanical skills on, he was wondering what points were:) I have rebuilt the carb, cleaned out the tank (that was a job), cleaned the points, etc. The old girl fires up and runs strong. One thing I have next is the clutch has trouble engaging. Assuming since it has been sitting for so long, it will need some TLC also. I am looking at a Clymer Vintage snowmobile manual and it states using a JDM-41-2 clutch compression tool to take the clutch apart. It doesn't give any guidance or information past that. Do you happen to know where I can find some technical information and or tools needed to take the clutch apart? It engaged a few times and I am assuming some lubrication will do the trick. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

check out www.vintagesnow.com
He has several JD manuals online and/or you can still order most manuals from JD directly.

LenZ, if that sled was sitting that long it will need new crank seals or your son will be learning about melted pistons and associated troubles.

You can service the the clutch without the special tool. Just mind the spring tension on disassembly.

I've been e-mailing with Len, and it turns out his 500 still has the Salsbury 850. I suggested he replace it with a Comet.
