Temp Sending unit cable pulled out on Liquifire

Post by ski »

Does anyone know if you can repair the cable that goes to the sending unit on the engine of my 1980 Liquifire? Mine pulled out.

At one time there was a post on here on how to repair a gauge with an aftermarket probe. I didn't feel like going through the hassle of doing that, and didn't want to spend a fortune on evilbay, so I went to the auto parts store and bought a sunpro gauge instead. It was only like $15-$18. The face is different than the OEM one but it is exactly the same size and fits the hole perfectly. The probe wire(or whatever it's called) is longer, but it can be coiled up, and cable tied under the dash. Just make sure it is away from any heat source so it doesn't get a false reading. I believe in the aftermarket thread someone is selling brand new copies of the original, they wern't out yet when I bought mine, and they're a little pricey for me to change what I have.

Hi Ski,
If you look at the top of the classified page at the reproduction parts new gauges are available.
There is somebody that rebuilds the old ones but I believe you can get a new one for the same price.

I was able to disassemble sensor and am wondering if there is any way to solder together? There is what appears to be a center wire that is broken. I assume that is the "main" lead to the copper sending unit. I thought I could strip back the main wire from gage that goes into sensor and solder together then recrimp everything together again. I could turn up a new sleeve on the lathe for recrimping it. Any thoughts on that idea? I'm going to try and post a picture. If it doesn't work I'll post a link to it.

That lead is not a wire. it is a small tube that WAS filled with a gas. If you want to reuse the gauge, you will have to buy a new gauge and graft the sending unit onto your old gauge as harley mentioned above.

I see the dilemma here. A mere mortal like me may not have the talent and skill to perform such a delicate operation. I think I'll go the aftermarket route...and still keep my eyes open for a good operating used one or NOS at the swapmeets. Thanks for the insite guys. Once again I learned something from this site!
