Reeds are simply a one way valve between the carb and the crankcase.
They are not needed on piston ported engines because of the intake design.
When you mount the carb to the case, they are needed. The reed design eliminates the spit back you see on piston ported engines.

If I remember correctly, Kioritz used a stainless steel reed in their engines.
Nowadays, I believe the material of choice is carbon fiber, which I think would be lighter. I really don't know if their is any performance advantage, but they must have went to this for a reason. The racing guys would know if anyone does.

There are aftermarket fiber reeds doubt any are made for these motors mostly newer sleds, quads, bikes etc. There are also different designed reed cages aswell as reed spacers but once again for newer stuff. There are fiber and carbon fiber designs have heard bad about carbon fiber from a friend who raced motocross seems when they breakup the can damage a motor. I remember along time ago reading about making modifications to the reed stops on dirt bikes. But these motors dont really have a stop. Id guess if you have some time and maching skills you could try and duplicate some of the modern reed spacers etc but doubt you will find anything you can just bolt on.
