76 cyclone

i just purchased a 76 cyclone 440 in n. dakota. i am curious about the serial #. it's j44fc 070100m. this site shows the the first #'s ending in fe and ending at 70,00. anybody know what's up with my #'s

Welcome aboard. Your right, there could be some confusion with the serial numbers. A 1976 440 Cyclone should have a serial number beginning with J44FE, 55,000 up to 70,000
The 1977 should be J44FF 70,001 UP TO 80,000
The build date actually preceeds the model year. Example: build date of 7/76= model year 1977.
You could have a replacement tunnel with incorrect hand stamped numbers. Can you shot a picture of the front pan. There are differences between a 76 and 77.
One difference that stands right out is the belt guard. The 76 has round sleeves which the rear mounting pin slides into. The 77/78 have "turned up" tabs which pop into place from underneath the rear anchor plate.
