Deere 300 tach?

Post by Mr300 »

Looking to put a tach i a '77 300 with the Kohler 295. As it's a points motor, what tach do I need? Harness has a 3 prong connector which is currently unused, but I found a tach online which matches the JD part # for this sled. It has three separate leads however? Anyone able to check for me as to how one is wired up? TIA

Mr300,
I'm pretty sure you want the one with the 3 separate leads for your sled. I have a copy of the installation sheet for that tach at home, which includes the correct wiring, and the list of sleds it fits. I will check for you tonight and let you know for sure.

Mr300,
According to the online John Deere parts catalog, you would need a tach with the part #AM52346. The installation instructions for that gauge only specifies the 1972, and 1973 models along with Spitfires and Trailfires. It has the 3 separate leads, the yellow on the tach goes to the yellow wire connector on the main wiring harness, the red wire on the tach goes to the brown/white wire wire connector on the main wiring harness, the yellow/red tach wire goes to the brown wire connector on the main wiring harness. Hope this helps.

Any 300 tach will work ie 74-77.
What will not work is 76 and up Liquifire and Cyclone. Or any tach from a Reed Valve CCW.
The 72 tachs have a chrome trim ring and will work but do not look right next too a black speedo.
Any gauge from a 73-74 400-500-600 would be the same also.

Don't forget that you also need a black wire (ground) that usually is jumpered over from the speedo. That is four wires total for the tach.
