78 liquifire cross country

Post by zacman »

i bought this sled for $20. no bs. its a 340 dual cylinder liquid cooled engine, and has a comet (102c?) clutch. serial number 080868M, 10 77. the sled is in average condition for its age, and the only thing not stock is the solid rubber track, which came with the sled, is not on it. it has a track w/ metal cleats. 2200 miles on the sled. the engine starts always on the first pull, and it moves under its own power.

my question is, my buddy will sell me a 78 liquifire 440 engine for $75. is it worth leaving this particular sled unmolested, or should i put the bigger engine in?

I wouldn’t change the motor. That's one of the sleds many people dream of finding. If you don’t already know this it was a limited production sled for cross country racing. I’m sure everyone here would like to see pictures.

80 Liquifire (purchased 2011 ~ Not running - I officially have a problem now)

78 Spitfire ~ sold (should have been shot for this)

I don't know that I'm interested in selling the sled, especially if its some kind of collectible. I'll post some pics tomorrow though.

I hope you leave the sled with the orginal engine in it,is a stock race sled.
If you want something faster, instead of altering this, sell it to someone
who will appreciate it for what it is and treat it accordingly, and use
the money and purchase something faster and more to your likeing!

Zacman you want us to believe that you purchased a 1978 cc liquifire for $20 not knowing what a cc liquifire was and the history behind it. :naughty: Then you ask us about putting a 440 in it to go faster. :wall: If you want fast and like JD I will trade you my clone 76 Dator with a 440 liquifire motor in it for your $20 cc liquifire.

Zacman, I too am confused. If you know you have a cross country and you seem to understand what it is then why would you even consider changing the engine??? I would say that you most likely have multiple people on this board willing to buy the sled (including myself) so my advice is to not dink with us. Decide soon whether or not you want to sell or keep it. Don't drive away any prospective buyers at this point. Just some advice from an old man.

zacman,
They only built 178 Cross Countrys in the factory, which is what makes them desirable, and pretty hard to find. Making any modifications to one such as swapping in the wrong engine will reduce the value, and as you can probably see, will also offend most Deere collectors.

As Don suggested, if you want something more powerful, then you would be much better off money wise if you sold the CC, and used that money to buy what you want, rather then swapping incorrect parts to it and hurting the value in the long-run.

You definitely got lucky on this one.
