paint color for green sleds
My son and I are going to start a resto of a 1974 400,We have done a complete tear down of the sled and now getting ready to start the rebuild process.Does anybody know what the correct color is for this sled? Also were the bogie wheels any specific color i.e. silver or black?we thought about it after we started that we should have taken a before picture of the sled but we will just have to start with a picture of the process.

The color is consumer John Deere Green. For a '74 the bogies are unpainted aluminum.

The '72s and '73s have the steel center bogies. To the best of my knowledge, they were originally black. Just to note: I have never seen any of those early bogies for sale in NOS condition. I have bought some of the later aluminum ones.

The bogies for my 73 X-4 are alum. with a steel bearing and according to the J/D parts book AM 52464 can be used for JD 400,500,&600 up to ser no. 20,000, & for 300,400,500, & 600 ser. no. 20001 and up. Also used on JDX 4 & JDX 8 ser no. up to 20,000. All take the same bogie no.
And yes I have bought some NOS off Ebay a couple of years ago but havent

The service manual mentions that the steel ( black ) bogies require a spacer, while the silver ones do not. Other than that, they interchange.
My '73 X8 009025 has the steel bogies.
'72 part number: AM52032

I appreciate Rich's comments on the change of paint over the years. To take it one step further, In restoring an older JD tractor I purchased a quart of JD red paint (white label - without lead) for the engine and transmission but ran a little short. I bought another can (black and yellow label with lead - several years older) with the exact same part number and mixed it up. They were not remotely close - one was similar to IH red and the other was almost maroon. In the early days, paint was merely a metal protectant until the tractor got oily and greasy. The shade varied based on available ingredients. Who back then would have thought that one day the old workhorse would be given an automotive quality paint job and be judged by the correct police?

ok, so i know the tunnel color and bogie colors. now a couple of more things to paint: the track tensioners on the idler set. also, what black were all of the components, flat or gloss? i'm also guessing that the gas tank wasn't winterfrost 2 so i need a color for that. also, was the muffler silver originally on a 73 400, i know of a 73 500 in a junkyard with a fairly good looking lightly rusted silver muffler. that covers colors, now i need to know where i can get the yellow tunnel stripe. final question, does anyone know if deere ever made extra black stickers that had the manufacturing information on it that go above the serial numbers on 72 and 73 models? thanks
