78 liquifire water pump

Post by skoalmint »

When is a water pump bad? I know the obvious reasons over heating. But mine wasnt just slightly leaking thru the weep hole on water pump housing.I am restoring this machine my crank goes to Jerome monday so i am going to be at a stand still for awhile .So i thought i would take a look at my leaking water pump.I took it all apart by the book, got to the impeller put it in the press just like the book put about a half a crank BAM no more impeller. But somthing i did notice thru all my ranting and raveing and a few other choice words was that behind the seal is a spring. So i started wandering is that spring designed to not only hold preasure against the impeller as well as release it .Does any one have any input on this.Maybe that is why it leaked i dont know i guess i should of left well enough alone. It was cooling fine just losing a litte antifreeze. This is the first and last one i will ever take apart. Thanks Brock PS WTB waterpump

If it was leaking now it sure would have been going out this winter, I'm sure that you had a seal that was either hard or cracked or the bearings or bushings were starting to go out.
Most of the time that is where a failure would be I haven't ever heard of a water pump making an engine over heat unless there is an impeller failure, most of the sled water pumps us a cast impeller so there isn't a problem, Although there IS one model of Polaris water pump that uses a plastic impeller & I have heard of those causing an over heat problem under power as them they start slipping on the shaft..
With the age of the Kioritz pumps I would replace or rebuild them if your doing a rebuild of the engine, just to make sure you don't have to do it in the winter time when you want to ride, it's just like also replacing the pump belt while your doing the job..
It amazes me that the service book tells you how to press the pump apart & put it back together BUT the PART BOOK doesn't have a break down for the bearings, seal, cup & spring assembly & rear cover gasket????

I noticed that as well the pump is sold as a complete unit but the tech manual i have shows you how to remove and press apart.Dont make sense! Does the guy that rebuilds your pumps have impellers? If so i will have him rebuild mine so i will have a spare if he would. No threat in me ever trying it again HA HA.Thanks Kenny

Nope no parts other than bearings & seals & gaskets.. Maybe someone has one that is broke where you can salvage the impeller out of it??
