This has probably been covered previously, but I did a search and couldn't find anything.
I have the exhaust from a 1975 800 and want to put it on my 74 JDX8, replacing the leaky stock muffler. I have heard there's some problems or challenges with doing that. Can someone fill me in on the issues and details to resolve?

Re: 800 Exhaust on 74 JDX8 Question
Do you have the exhaust manifold from the 800 to go with it?
When the 800/JDX8 came out, there were apparently big flooding problems. The solution was the CDI upgrade kit to get a stronger spark. I don't know how much of that issue can be attributed to the pipe though.

Re: 800 Exhaust on 74 JDX8 Question
It should be a pretty easy retrofit. The only concern I would have is how much clearance there is between tuner pipe and the '74 hood once closed????? Other than that you will have to cut new holes for the muffler in the right side bottom of the pan. You can drill a hole in the steering support to attach the spring that holds the pipe in place so it doesn't rattle against the hood. You may also have to relocate the main wiring harness that is cabled tied to the steering support to keep it away from the pipe. The speedo cable may require the same treatment. If your '74 X8 has provisions for electric start you will have to remove the battery box.

Re: 800 Exhaust on 74 JDX8 Question
I'm not to concerned about the retro fit. Should be able to make that work as you layed out. I've heard that the tuned pipe doesn't provide enough exhaust back pressure for the engine to run right. Anyone experience that?

Re: 800 Exhaust on 74 JDX8 Question
I've never heard anything about reduced back pressure with the tuner pipe. As long as the tuner pipe exhaust system doesn't have any holes in it and is sealed up at the joints it should create plenty of back pressure.
