Gaskets and seals??

Post by Mr300 »

Found out one reason why the Kohler 295 wouldn't run. Started to tear down for gaskets and seals and found the PTO end seal in two pieces   End plate came off and left the inner piece on the crank! Couple quickie questions though. Should the crank seals have any type of sealant on their outer circumference, where they seat in the end plate? If so, what. All other gaskets go on dry I assume. I see an o-ring referenced on the mag side, but my kit didn't come with one. Is there one there, and can they be re-used? When I pull the blower housing off, can I leave the stator/points plate in place inside the housing and not have to retime it? TIA.

You can't leave the stator in, but just use a sharpie to mark a line on both the case and plate so you can re-position. The seals shouldn't need anything extra.

If your O-ring has a flat spot you should replace that also. Common part at a hardware or auto supply store.

Well....................it lives!!!! :sled: Kit did not have the o-ring in it, and when I finished pulling the motor apart I found it didn't have one either  Whoever was into it before me "missed" a few parts. Anyways, with the new gasket set, seals, a 34mm Mikuni installed, new clutch put on, and a new defective fuel pump replaced, it started in 3 pulls. Got the idle adjusted, gauges hooked up, seat on and a buff/wax job. My 16 yr. old had a blast helping, he learned alot. Need to run it to make sure the clutch shifts out right, and then :letitsnow: :letitsnow: .
