1976 Liquifire
Installed new coils and CDI ,still no spark. How many grounds do I need to check and where.
Engine is out of the sled now.
For some reason there was a wire going from the right coil to a bolt on the recoil.
Want to make sure all the grounds are checked before I tackle the stator.

Re: 1976 Liquifire
Did you check for spark before the engine was removed? Here are simple guidelines to follow:
http://www.jdsleds.com/community/viewto ... ?f=5&t=289
The contact points of the coils to the mounting studs need to be clean, free of rust.
There should be a common ground strap between both coils(thin copper plate).
There should be a ground wire attached to the right side coil and also one of the mounting studs of the CDI.
The ground terminal of the CDI needs to be clean and free of rust.
If all grounds are good and you have a known good CDI box and coils, more than likely the low-speed winding of the stator is bad. Again, follow the link posted and check the ohms of the stator.

Checked the stator.

lighting coil-0.5
How successful is it to try and repair vs.new from HewTech?

Re: 1976 Liquifire
I had two rebuilt by Hewtec right after he started offering the service.
The ohm numbers weren't a lot better than before ( low side of OK ) but the insulation on the wires is all new, and that is probably the biggest improvement to reliability you can get. The Prestolite stators weren't trouble free when they were new. Used ones are a crap shoot, even NOS ones have turned out to be bad. I tested around 6 used ones I had here, and I couldn't find even one that would test on the high side of OK, all on the low.
Send it to Hewtec and get it re-wound, it's not cheap, but its the only good option.

Re: 1976 Liquifire
Are the stators interchangeable between Cyclones and Liquifires?
Re: 1976 Liquifire
yes am53755 is the 76 stator for cyclone l/f am 54174 is the 77-78 cyclone l/f stator the difference is the plug on the end of them. the 76 had a square plug on the cdi box the 77-78 have round plugs the wires can be spliced but its easier to find the correct one wade

Re: 1976 Liquifire
Thanks for the help.
Sled is ready to go except for this inconvenient stator problem.

Re: 1976 Liquifire
We started last year with 6 prototype rewound stators to get things going. A few (black wire units) were sold after we had some hr's on them & decided they worked. Since then, we have converted to YELLOW & BLUE wires & GREEN for lighting. Probably have 25 or so rewinds out there now. I did warranty-replace a couple early units when we found a wire error, but this was early on & we caught it right away & replaced them ASAP. Now have QC procedures in place & stopped any problems once we locked in the specs & drawings. We are using a higher-grade wire & epoxy coating, not varnish, so they hold up way better in the heat. 90-day warranty & our cost is $165...lower cost than you'll find elsewhere. I'm not trying to make $ on the stators, just trying to offer another part to keep the sleds running when we determine your stock CDI is still good & your stator is bad.
Our rewound stators meet original spec 100% for resistance & will work with all original OEM parts as well as our FIREPLUG CDI!. We can also provide the B-style mating connector on the stator to let you use the standard B-style CDI in place of the round connectors. http://www.cdibox.com for details.........thanks...Scott
