Fuel pick up

Post by trailfire55 »

Fule pick up is broke off inside the tank. I need to pull plastic fitting out of the tank to install a new hose and pickup. Anyone know how it comes out? Do I just give it a good pull?

Also does anyone know the factory setting on the air screw for the Mikuni carb? It is very boggy in the first 1/4 of the throddle. The pilot jet is clean.

Edit: Oops! Looks like I put this in the wrong area. Feel free to move it to the tech area.

Good morning trailfire55 , The rubber grommet just pulls out but you will destroy it taking it out. You can still get new grommets from you local John Deere dealer the part number is M149638. They are cheep. The part number for the intank filter is AM54051. I would buy a couple grommets so you have a spare one on hand just in case. As for trying to get the broken pick up hose out of the tank, siphon all the fuel out of the tank so you can see the hose laying on the bottom. I used a wire coat hanger and cut and bent at the bottom with a small hook on the end with it opened enough for the hose to slide into the opening and bend the hanger 90 degress about 1/2 inch from hook part. then you can fish the broken hose out.
As for the carb setting go to vintagesnow.com you can download all the info you need for the carb and also the jd parts, service manuals. it will be under the 79 trailfire they dont have one for a 80 trailfire but they are very close. I have a 79 440 trailfire and a 80 340 trailfire. I use these manuals all the time.
also MFGSUPPLY.COM is a good place to buy the tygon fuel hose.
Good luck and happy sledding. :sled: :letitsnow:

The fuel bulkhead fitting just pops out of the fuel tank. It has a tapered rubber fitting that when pushed through the tank's fuel hole, it expands and grabs onto the tank from the inside.

Should be 1.5 turns open (from the lightly seated position).

I have one of those grasping tool gizmos that works very well when this happens. You still have to play trial and error, but a good flashlight and a little determination will retrieve that broken off pick up without a lot of trouble. Siphon out enough fuel to get it below the draw port and you should be fine. You also may get lucky and not destroy the grommet.?

This is one reason why I do not like the plastic tank pickup screen assemblies that some places sell. Mine had the brass unit with a steel head on the end of it. This allowed me to use a telescoping magnet to fish it out of the tank when the hose broke off inside.

If you don't have a telescopic magnet, you can use a piece of coathanger with an old computer hard drive magnet fastened to the end of it. Those magnets are strong enough that they could pull the engine through the fuel tank!! :bonk:

The best way to get those old hoses and pick-ups out is to take the tnk off of the sled and turn it up-side down and shake :lol22: then you can clen your tank good from ny debris or build up .. Like a 10 minute job ! the brass and steel pick-up are sold at Dk and work great !!
