1978 340 Spitfire kohler motor

Post by bear1784 »

ok sled starts 1 or 2 pulls everytime. Runs great for about 20 to 30 minutes then bogs down and dies when you gas it. Carb seems to be set perfect, have tried to swap CDI box and Coil with used ones I have, when it starts to act up made no diff. Im stummped doesnt seem to be fuel issue. IDK could be startor prob anyway to read voltage and see. please help. only thing I haven checked is fuel vacum pump

As the Spitfire has a free air engine it is easy to overheat it.
Once it gets too warm it behaves like it is loosing power.
Continuing to run it when it is hot and it will sieze up.

Two things that can cause it to overheat are putting around at slow speeds and riding when the temperature is too warm out.

Or your problem may be that you have a bad crankshaft seal(s).
This will cause the engine to overheat due to a lean fuel /air mixture.
Continuing to run it like this will melt down a piston.

Other causes may be timing, restricted airflow, broken cooling fins on the heads, restricted exhaust and many more.
