Flywheel Removal JD 400

Post by CheetahSteve »

Im working on my brothers 74 JD 400, that has no spark, so I bought some right size bolts for my flywheel puller, threw it on thought it would pop right off, Not a chance

So what do you guys suggest to get this thing off. Ive never had flywheels on this tight before, I broke my darn puller trying to get it off. All I use is a harmonic balancer puller.

Any ideas

When the puller is installed and tight, tap the end of the puller with a hammer.

Last resort: Use a LITTLE heat on the end of the crank. Stay away from the flywheel, as the heat could melt the glue holding on to the magnets.

It doesn't have a Ring Gear does it? if so you'll have to remove the fan tower I believe..

i bought a puller from dk last winter and destroyed it on about the third flywheel i pulled what a peice of crap . i use a harmonic balancer puller that came from napa i think .i use black socket head bolts from the hardware store to bolt to fltwheel . ive only had one i havent been able to get off with a reasonable about of puller tension and a little beating on the puller screw .

I had a tough one the other day on my 600. Impact wrench on the puller helps. Crank it tight, hit it a couple times with the hammer then crank it tight and hit it again. Did that a couple times Then I sprayed it with wd40 and let it sit for a day. Put heat on the flywheel near the shaft, repeated the above and it popped loose.
