79 Spitfire Tach Install w/o Speedo

Post by gnfreak »

hi all, i'm attempting to install a tach into my 79 spitfire. it came without a tach or a speedometer. the instructions i have tell me to use an AM54655 wiring harness. without buying a speedo kit to get that harness, is there any place to get just the harness by itself? anyone out there have an actual picture of the connector? the parts book shows it but not in great detail. looking at the wiring diagram for the sled it looks like i could wire it up without the correct harness but if i can get one i'd feel better.

Keith,
If your wiring harness doesn't come through let me know I should have an NOS one. Also if you need installation instructions let me know, I can scan a set and e-mail them to you. If you have any other questions let me know, I just installed a set of gauges on my 79 Spitfire.

Kieth, You have to call as I don't think they have any of the Deere part numbers on the website.. As long as you have Part numbers Diane can ck to see if they are suppose to have them on her computer, BUT sometimes there inventory control is a little out of control..

well, installed the new tach (AM52346)and the special yellow harness (AM54655) and i'm not getting it to read rpms. the needle just bounces around under 1000 rpm all the time. the tach light does light up so i know i've got power to the yelow wire. the black ring connector is screwed on to one of the mounting lugs. the red wire is plugged in to its proper connector on the headlight wiring connector. yellow and yellow/red wires hooked into the special yellow harness. is there a way to check the tach for proper operation? it was new in the box so i'm hoping this isnt it. i started checking the wires with my multitester and looked in the spitfire tech manual for specs. the first check was the alternator wires to the junction block. i have continuity but the resistance was somewhat higher than specified. could this cause the tach not to work? thanks for any help, keith
