It sounds like you've gotten yourself a genuine racer. Just can't figure out where it came from. Email me the serial number to bison1112002@yahoo.com and I'll see what I can find.

Thanks Matt for posting that! The engine turns over great ,feels like it has decent compression(hard to tell just by hand)it is missing stator,so i cant get a compression check yet.It has 1123 miles on it .Covers are all still in tact, not cracked, all the air ducts still there, carbs, missing the hose that goes from the fan duct to the air box ,if anyone has one let me know part #65914.Got my parts book today Man i feel like a genius now.Thank Brock

Hi Brock,

Just wondering if there was foam under the tank cover? I am re-doing my CC tank cover now but don't know if there should be a layer of foam between the CC tank and cover or not. Could you let me know?

Thanks,
Craig

Craig, if you're referring to the 340/S dual fill tank then yes there is foam between the cover and tank. I might have a picture somewhere but it's about an inch thick as I recall.

Hi Don/Kenny,

Thanks for the replies.

Kenny, I did buy foam from John for the tank but the cover is such a tight fit that it seems to buckle around the fill spouts when I stretch the cover forward to snap it on. At first I thought the tank was not far enough ahead but it is as far ahead as it will go. So that's why I thought maybe there wasn't supposed to be foam.

Looking at it closer, I see the cover is hitting the back of the 2 fill spouts too soon and that makes it too hard to stretch the cover forward to the snaps. It almost seems like the holes in the cover ohn made are just a 1/2" too far back and that makes it a real stretch to get the cover to reach the snaps in the front.

Maybe it's me though. Don, did you really have to stretch the hell out of the cover to get it to fit? I suppose I can get it to fit but the snaps won't hold it then and the cover will look odd since it won't go around the fill spouts evenly. Did you have to use some indutrial strength snaps to hold the cover on? Any suggestions are welcome!

Thanks,
Craig

Well, I remembered in 74 when the tank and cover arrived it fit like a "saddle on a sow". We had to cut the material around the fill openings to make it fit. Sooo, knowing that, it was the only time I did not use a "John" product but took it to Fort Wayne and had it custom made. WAY LOTS OF $$$$$$$ but a great job. DA

Every old cover I've seen for the twin fill tanks has about 1" - 2" slits cut in the filler holes so that the material goes up the spout when put on & probably like you say then it fits the holes better??

Thanks Don and Kenny. I feel like I'm on the right track now. I'll take it to an upholsterer here and get an adjustment done on the holes. That's no no big deal to get done.

If anyone is getting a CC tank cover from John you might want to ask him to place the holes back an inch or so to allow the cover to fit better. At least that's situation in my case. Thanks for the help!
