JDX8 brake assembly

The 73 JDX8 I'm working on had a brake "rotor" that had broken free of its key on the secondary shaft. The casting cracked apart and it let loose. It was kind of funny because it'd sit there for about 20 seconds spinning freely after shut down and of course the brake band had nothing to help it slow the sled. I've replaced it with a new shaft and rotor but can't seem to get the assembly configuration right. I assume I had all the original parts and based on repair diagrams I do, but the rotor still slides left and right on the shaft, moving around inside the brake band. It rubs/hits the housing too. Am I missing a spacer collar or something else? I would assume the brake rotor needs to be centered with minimal slop inside the housing in order to bind properly with the band, but mine wanders over towards the secondary clutch. The rotor is cast on one side with a center that slopes out and makes space, but on the other side the center is lower than/even with(?) the edge at the circumference. Therein lies my problem. I'm thinking about just adding a generic spacer but am unsure what width to use. Anyone ever put one of these together right that can help me out here?

Did you install the bearings correctly? The bearings on either side of the brake drum should have the flanges toward the right hand side of the machine.

I checked tonight. The bearings do go to the right (operator's right hand side). Should there be anything besides just the bearings, like a bearing collar?

I don't believe Deere used locking collars on any of the bearings in the sled.

I was looking to see if there were any spacers or washers on either side of the brake drum, and I don't see anything in the parts book. Obviously, the drum has to stay in one place.

I don't think there are any spacers. Usually, the drum is a pretty snug fit on the shaft, and doesn't just slide around.

From my experience trying to remove and reinstall them, I believe those drums are a press fit. I would say if it fits that loose, either the shaft or the drum, or both, need to be replaced.

Thanks for the feedback guys, its helpful. That's what I'd thought too, that locking collars were more of a aftermarket thing, and that the parts book matches what I've installed. I might try a collar and hope it happens to be the right fit as a spacer too. Question about the pressing on idea: could it be pressed on based on the way the rotor is inside its own housing? I don't recall it wanting to fit through the bearing hole? I'll look it over again, maybe the key is shot and I don't know it. Maybe a new key will make for a snug fit?
