80 Liquifire - Engine boggs out after 20-30 minutes

Post by mikejohndeere »

If anyone can help me with this I'd appreciate it.

I have a 1980 Liquifire, after getting it started with a little starter fluid it seems to run well for about 20-30 minutes. At that point the engine begins to bogg out and the sled will not move. Of course the sled has gas, the track and drive parts are free of problems. Seems to be more of a engine issue.

I've been told the CDI could need replaced because it's heating up and not working, not sure??? Otherwise I have no idea. It seems strange that the sled runs very strong for 20-30 minutes and then seems to totally die. Once it begins to bog out the sled will putter and then quit, at that point it can't be restarted until cooled. Any ideas?

If you have any ideas of how to fix and correct I would appreciate the feedback.

Mike-
Same thing happened to my 80 liquifire and once I replaced the CDI box it never did it again. So I would assume you have the same issue.

I would ride for 20min and when I would come to a stop, it would bogg down to 1500 rpms and eventually die out. Once I would wait for awhile it would fire right back up on the first pull...

Sounds like my issue exactly and I have another new CDI box. I'll try it. Thanks.

Must be the stator cause the sled will fire right up after it cools?
Many new and used parts available, I ship anywhere. Thanks everyone.

Try disconnecting the rev limiter.

Actually I have a new coil pack that is not installed and not a CDI.

Is is wise to invest in a new CDI or work with the stator? I should say that the sled doesn't want to start on it's own when cool easily. It needs a little starter fluid to get going, but once running it's very strong.

Thoughts?

Our 82 LF did/does the same thing (82+ LF has a different ignition) . Changed CDI Box, rev limiter, and now the stator and flywheel. Giving it the hot run test this weekend. The stator pulse coil had been soldered in by a quack, flywheel distorted and chipped magnets with a 'jaw puller' and a burned spot on the underside, so it has seen better times.

Change out the easy parts first, as the stator remove/replace is a pain. Ohm readings are on this site for stators too. Course you will have to take two readings- cold & hot.

Good luck! Electrical is for me at least, takes up so much time to trace and fix.

After 20-30 minutes you say it bogs and dies and wont start.

Is there spark ? Is fuel getting to the carbs ? Will it actually start and run; but poorly ?

Actually once started the sled run great with lots of power. It does have spark, compression is strong. Seems to be getting more than enough fuel b/c it goes through a tank very quickly, not fuel efficient at all.

But seems like an electrical problem.

Stator or CDI in my opionion, sounds like a heat soak problem

Thanks for the help. Going to start with the CDI and move to the stator.
