JD 300 Carb Issues

Post by stevenh »

Hi all: I have a JD 300 with the K295 kohler. I completely went through the engine with a gasket and seal set and pressure tested it to spec. It came with a Tillotson HD 59A on it that I swapped to a Tillotson HD 113A that came off a 440 motoski. The HD 59 was missing the check valve so I rebuilt the 113 and put it on. The problem is I can't hardly open the high speed needle or the engine appears to flood and will die. I can get it to idle beautifully but have to keep opening the butterfly to keep it going when opening up the high speed needle but ultimately it will flood and kill it when I get it open enough to create the power. Also the idle needle is closed much more than the manual indicates. The Tillotson manual hints that if it will only idle with the high speed needle closed, the ball check valve is defective. So I tore it apart and checked the ball valve with a vacuum guage and it seems to be working. Do you think the HD 113A is just to big a carb for the little engine? I'm thinking about swapping the check valve into the 59 and trying it instead. Any thoughts?
Thanks

I believe the 59 carb is from a mid 70's skidoo engine. They did not have a choke, only a primer.

Yes, either carb is oversized for the small kohler.
