I just completed the installation of my Autometer temp guage in the 78 LF. I have 2 of the reproduction gauges ordered, so this is just temporary, or most likely, temp until it breaks!
To get the proper 12vdc power to the gauge, I built a full wave rectifier the sit between the lighting coil tap at the speedo gauge and the temp gauge. Total cost was around $5.00 from radio shack.
Parts needed:
- 25A, 50V Full-Wave Bridge Rectifiers RadioShack Cat #276-1185 $3.49
- 470µF 35V 20% Radial-lead Electrolytic Capacitor RadioShack Cat #272-1030 $1.49
The voltage drop across the rectifier is 1.5 volts, so I get just about 12.2 volts exactly.

Re: Electric Temperature guage
Note: If you use an electric sender type gauge, you must use the ones with the isolated ground (2-wire sender unit). If you use the single wire unit, it will not work as the ground to the sender will be AC when it needs DC current.
