Yet another Dator saved from a barn

Post by 80spitfire »

Well I have finally done it guys, I brought home my first Dator! I saw the thread show up this morning and I called the number and found out the sled lived 30 miles away!! Needless to say, I hopped in the truck and brought her home. She's a little rough though. It has a Nos unstamped Cyclone tunnel on it, too bad it's not a Dator tunnel, but oh well. It does have the original motor though and personally I'd rather have the motor than the tunnel if I had my choice anyways. The motors apart but I did get .10 over NOS pistons so that's awesome. I'll post some pictures tomorrow once I get her out of the trailer. I don't have the hood yet because the guy I bought it from is going to bring it to me later this week. I do have a original cover though!! It's kinda rough but we'll get her patched up. I can't wait to get this puppy all pretty again!

Thanks guys,
Brian

Well the story just got a little bit more interesting, I saw what my hood looks like that I'm getting this weekend and it turns out my sled was number 87. I was pretty stoked to find out that my sled has a pedigree.

Looks like its mostly there. I even see a tunnel cooler which is a must for trail riding. Take your time and do it right. Have fun with it. Looks like alot of work but it worth it. Heres mine before the makeover.

Yeah most of it's there, she's gonna take a little bit of doing though lol I definitely intend on taking my time on this one, you can't screw up on a Dator it's just wrong lol Yeah I was thinking it might be nice to keep the tunnel cooler, I've heard that it's definitely helpful. I'm guessing they added it when they raced it. That was quite the Dator you started with lol I wish mine was purple jk :) You did a hell of a good job with it though. I remember talking about it with you at Waconia next to Riches trailer... I was wondering too, do you happen to know if the suspension that's on my sled is the Datorlite suspension? Thanks

That looks like a lite susp. Heavy susps were steel.

Keep the tunnel cooler, I installed one in mine whe I restored it. makes it much more consistant cooling. Unless you like riding consistantly over 50 mph.

Sweet. Yeah I wasn't sure if it was a real Dator or not. Do you know how to tell the difference?

I don't know the lite susps real well, Mine are all heavy. they are very similiar to 78 susps. and it looks like you have the wheel kit too.

That's awesome that you have to run them over 50 to keep em cool, just one more trait of race sleds that I love.

Yeah I thought that looked like a few extra bogeys. It's interesting to see what all has been added to it either when it raced or during the tunnel swap.
