Rupp Sprint resurrection

I purchased a 70 Rupp in the fall with the idea of running it in the local one lung 100 miler. It looked a little rough when i picked it up but never realised how bad of shape it was in. Every bearing was completely shot, bolts broke and metal pieces cracked. I stripped down the sled to the bare tunnel and replaced most every nut bolt and rivet on the way back up.

This was my first attempt at a quasi restoration, I did everything myself including my first full motor rebuild. I had to pull an all nighter before the race, with fellow board member EppJD, in which we discovered a hole in the chain case around 1 am. We went until 4:30 the morning of the race getting everything working. A few test laps in the yard and it was off to the races.

We completed half of the race before the crank drain rattled loose and we had to shut down before the motor melted down. After the first 20 miles I discovered 3 broken motor mounts, we were able to fix them with some borrowed self tapping screws. Another lap netted up 2 lost boogie wheels and problems with the throttle cable. I enjoyed the race but more testing will be required before the next attempt. It is a small miracle that things worked as well as they did considering the clutch was a complete guess, the motor was little more than an educated guess and 1 test mile around the yard before the race.

You did well for a first outing Scott.

Racing is very educating.
If you sled has a weak spot racing will find it for you.

Were you suprised at the torque that 368 pumps out? :canadasmile:

Todd, there was enough torque and vibration to shear 12 out of 16 rivets on the motor mounts in the first 20 miles. I need some major tuning to get the potential out of the motor. We stole the carb from a JD 800 and used 10 shims per puck on the power bloc I borrowed. I really need to find some longer legs for the Rupp now affectionately call little smokey. I was probably the 4th slowest out of the 26 machines that started. I have no tach but think the motor is turning a little slow, so I think I will pull 1 shim from each puck and see if that helps. I feel we would have finished had it not been for the crank drain.

Did you use steel or aluminum rivets?

I used aluminum, I know I should have used steel but I could not find them anywhere I looked. There is now 1/4" self tapping screws which should hold.

I wouldn't hold much faith in self tapers in thin sheet metal.

If you go to a body shop they may have 1/4" steel rivets and the appropriate tool to pop them in. It is a big two handed tool about 2 feet long.
You will never be able to set them with a Mason type hand rivet tool.
Use steel backing washers also.
