I've never read that thread, but yeah I wouldn't doubt it that there are over 20 diferences. Some of them are very minute and some fo them are pretty big.

Since were on the topic of 1972,
I have never seen a 1972 front belt gaurd (M 63458),is it plastic or steel?, and were the shock absorbers (AM 52111) chrome or painted black?

I'm not sure which one you mean because everyone calls them diferent names, but there's a green painted steel guard that goes over the primary and a black plastic guard that goes over the secondary. The Shock absorbers were an option in the beginning years that pretty much everyone added just because they made them ride a lot better. The original kits came with black shocks; the ones on mine are aftermarket and I haven't replaced them yet because I don't have found original ones yet.

Check out these picks from my 1972 owners manual. The front belt gaurd over the secondary looks steel. The plastic one is not on the 1972. You can also click this link and go to page 100 to see the gaurds: http://www.vintagesnow.com/John_Deere_f ... _Parts.pdf

I have never seen this gaurd before

The part that they call the belt shield is definitely plastic on the 72s not steel, it does look lke steel though and it's actualy pretty thick plastic, but it's plastic none the less. Nice job scoring those NOS parts! You should post some pictures of your progress on the sled so far.

The belt shield ( M63458 ) over the secondary is steel, and painted black. It was also used on the '75 models.

Here's the side view of it and I also took a picture of a 72 parts manual that you can see the cap in.
Yes those are '72s, and your description of the '73 and '74 skis is spot on.

At one time we thought that the '72 tach was about as rare an item as there was. Few of the guys could even remember seeing one back in the day. In recent years a limited number of them have shown up.

I know we put together a list of the differences between '72 and '73, but I don't know where it got put. FAQs?

I did a little bit more research on the belt shield and found out that M63458 is the correct part for the 72s. I also looked a little bit closer and did notice the difference in the picture that it is the steel one, so my apologies on that one because I was going by the one on my sled. My sled ended up at some point getting a M63913 added to it which surprisingly fits perfect lol I always wondered if they ever actualy came with the M63458 or not because I too haven't seen one before other than in manuals. I've always seen them with the same one mine has.

Cool I'm glad now we all know the differences. I was about 99% positive they were right, but you never know.

Yeah you practicaly never see the tachs on the sleds. I consider myself pretty lucky to have been able to trade for one to complete my sled.

The tach issue is very interesting.
What are the part #'s you all are talking about? I know that on one of the early nos tachs I have, one has a white needle and one a red needle. So what part # is it?
The nos AM52111 shocks I have are all black but maybe service parts were different than factory installed?

My '72 parts catalog ( printed in Jan 72 ) lists the first tach as AM52058. I don't think any of us have seen that one.
It had already been subbed to: AM52118 We've seen both white and red needles on those.

Last year at the RWTC, in St Germain, John Orvis was telling us how they had a very hard time finding a tach that would live in the snowmobile environment. The shock loads would kill them in a very short time.
