Small idler wheels

Post by webman »

Has anyone managed to track down a replacement for the small idler wheels on the newer JDs?

The OEM number is AM54652.

I had a Yamaha Exciter last winter and if I remember right the small idler wheels on that were about the same... something to check into, let us all know what you find!

Webman, I picked up a bunch of wheels that I hope will work. They have a alum hub with a replaceable bearing with small rubber, I'll ck & see if they will work & If I have to change the bearings to get the right size for the shaft..

I have had no luck in finding a replacement, so I am trying to tear it apart and replace the bearing.

I believe I got some from MFG Supply last year that are a match for size. They don't have the original style metal centers but if you just want a set that will work these will go right in. The part number is 04-116-71. It is a 4.25" OD wheel with bearing. Price is $15 ea.

If they are the ones that go on top of the rear arm in the Liquifire suspension then these are very close to the same diameter. I measuerd an OEM one I have in really good shape and it is 4 1/8" OD.

Re: Small idler wheels--good part numbers

Post by manitobatrailfires »

I just pulled my 79 Trailfire apart and found the original upper idler wheels with integral bearings, too, which I guess is JD part AM54652. I measured it as 4.25" OD.
The part number listed earlier in this thread from Mfg Supply matches a part number listed in Sun and Snow in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. According to their catalog, that size upper idler was used extensively from the 70s through the 90s. Ski Doo part number is 572.0354.00 and it's on the shelf at my local Skidoo dealer. It lists the OEM Cat number as 0114-209. It lists the Polaris part number as 1543014. It did not list that Yamaha used a similar size.
I haven't checked the fit of any of these yet, so I can't guarantee this is all accurate. The OEM wheel I just took off is stamped as having been built in Wisconsin. Makes sense all the sleds would use a similar/identical part, having been manufactured close together.
Perhaps this will help someone else quickly find a replacement upper idler when needed.
Eric

ADDED INFO:
SKi Doo ones are perfect fit, and were $22.50, aftermarket ones were on back order, Polaris were $33 each, Cat ones were $29. SKi Doo ones are made in Canada, so that might account for the price discrepancy up here.

I replace the bearings.

By, drilling the peened area out. Then I use M4 socket head cap screws (maybe 12mm long?) and nuts with blue loctite to hold the two halfs together.
